Union player is tasked with defending the Rappahannock crossings. I decided to be aggressive and sent my cavalry across the river behind his main infantry advance. I was able to catch his cavalry off guard and rack up a good size point lead. This caused his infantry reinforcements to chase my horse and delayed his attack north enough that he was willing to accept a minor defeat which resulted in a drawn campaign.

I wanted to do as much damage to the Confederates as possible, as well as push them west away from the creek crossing before their additional units arrived. I then tried to hold the best defensible ground possible so that my reinforcements could cross the creek and join in the attack wherever the enemy seemed weakest. It was a difficult battle for the union and I was lucky to get a minor victory.

The Confederates did not push the Union forces and waited for the Union to come to them. The Yankees came very close to the CSA Guns, but routed when victory seemed within thier grasp. For a Major vicotory it held a good amount of suspense.

Union made the initial push on my right and were repulsed. They followed that up with a successful attack on my left before being stalled. The game swung on 6 guns captured by my forces but recaptured by Union forces on the last turn. I found this to be a very enjoyable game as I felt my Confederate forces were on the verge of collapse for most of the last half of the game yet we managed to hold on to preserve a minor victory.

Playing as the Union I was able to take the high ground either side of Mill Creek Gap road and my guns were able to eventually dominate the valley about Buzzards Roost. Also, my opponent was very aggressive and I was able to surround three regiments and force them to surrender. Offered a minor defeat to my opponent as that the current level and I didn't see much gain in pushing further.

The Confederates get an early jump against the fixed Union units but they release and then the real battle continues. Gery did an excellent job of advancing his artillery in the wooded terrain and punishing my infantry and artillery. He did leave some large stacks of guns unprotected a couple of times and I was able to counterattack and take them and that was party of the difference. I was also able to build up a Napoleonic type grand battery at one of the open areas and severly punish his attempts to advance there. I also was able to cause severe casualties amongst his cavalry as they tried to flank my forces and that was the final nail in the coffin. This was a very enjoyable scenario, though the Union has to sweat knowing that Buell isn't coming this time.

Weather conditions are bad so it takes a long time for the Rebs to approach the Union positions. I scored big against Reb cavalry as my opponent left them vulnerable to Union infantry several times. This 1st game between Mark Nelms and I started with a flurry, as Mark's Union troopers appeared to be trying to make it to the town first. They were stopped short at the stream and both sides began to draw up their lines. The Union was forced to initially hold with dismounted cavalry, who understandably came up on the short as CSA infantry came into play. Flanking forays were sent out by both sides, effectively negating each others effect. The battle eventually settled into a stalemate, with neither side seeing an advantage in pressing the issue. Mark is a great opponent.... patient, courteous and very competent (though he'll tell you otherwise).

This was the 2nd game between Mark Nelms in the Civil War Battles tournament. Both Mark and I learned from the first scrap (this second match featured us reversing sides). My Union strategy was to avoid the early, uneven cavalry vs. infantry matchups which were costly for Mark's troops. Had I commanded the Union first in the 2 games I think I'd have gone straight for the town likely suffered the same early troubles Mark had in that one. Anyway, the Union advanced in the early stages, wanting to make the Rebs to slow their advance and to make it appear they were headed for Middle Creek. Following some initial cavalry skirmishes it became apparent the CSA infantry was coming up, so the Union dropped back to a line which would allow arriving reinforcements a shorter march to the front lines, just east of Marsh Creek and Cattail Branch. We once again settled into pretty solid lines, exchanging artillery rounds levelled at any units which happened to be in LoS. On Turn 23 we settled at a draw, as whomever advanced against the others well-established lines stood a good chance of being thoroughly chewed over.

In this scenario McDowell is present and free to move. I moved him around the far southern flank of the Rebs and he had no one to meet them as my other forces had made an attack to pin any reserves he had south of the Chickahominy. North of the Chickahominy I decided to withdraw all my forces to south of the river. Couldn't reinforce them enough to hold and there is only 400 VP points on that side. I wanted to withdraw and destroy all the bridges and fortify the two fords so that the Rebs would have to backtrack after pursuing me the entire distance. Rebs surrendered early as this left them no one to stop McDowell from marching into Richmond.

As the Union Player I didn't even attempt to salvage the supply wagons but got the hell out of Dodge so as to save the troops. Rebel cavalry has too much of a chance of flanking you and cutting the escape route to allow the Reb infantry to catch up and savage Union forces. I figured better to run away and fight another day. Therefore my opponent agreed to accept a minor victory once it was obvious my troops would make their escape. A scenario redesign assigning enough value to the Union supply wagons to give the Rebs a major victory if taken would probably be appropriate.

Also mistakenly left a regiment exposed and the Union jumped on it like a duck on a june bug and I lost one whole regiment.
