While I'm parcial since I designed it, I think this is a good scenario played from either side.

I like this scenario very much. Forces about equal on both sides, very little objective points to be had, and no preconceived notion as to what to do. Enough troops (25k to 30k) and enough turns (32) to be interesting without bogging down trying to manuever a 100k man army. Commander Cody, my opponent, fought bravely and well. Fell behind early but continued to challange till the end. Actually, he had a large part of Hood's Division trapped against a river and may have wiped it out if the game would have lasted 2 or 3 more moves. As it was, the game ended when the score was still in my favor. Great game, Sir!

This 1st game between Mark Nelms and I started with a flurry, as Mark's Union troopers appeared to be trying to make it to the town first. They were stopped short at the stream and both sides began to draw up their lines. The Union was forced to initially hold with dismounted cavalry, who understandably came up on the short as CSA infantry came into play. Flanking forays were sent out by both sides, effectively negating each others effect. The battle eventually settled into a stalemate, with neither side seeing an advantage in pressing the issue. Mark is a great opponent.... patient, courteous and very competent (though he'll tell you otherwise).

This was the 2nd game between Mark Nelms in the Civil War Battles tournament. Both Mark and I learned from the first scrap (this second match featured us reversing sides). My Union strategy was to avoid the early, uneven cavalry vs. infantry matchups which were costly for Mark's troops. Had I commanded the Union first in the 2 games I think I'd have gone straight for the town likely suffered the same early troubles Mark had in that one. Anyway, the Union advanced in the early stages, wanting to make the Rebs to slow their advance and to make it appear they were headed for Middle Creek. Following some initial cavalry skirmishes it became apparent the CSA infantry was coming up, so the Union dropped back to a line which would allow arriving reinforcements a shorter march to the front lines, just east of Marsh Creek and Cattail Branch. We once again settled into pretty solid lines, exchanging artillery rounds levelled at any units which happened to be in LoS. On Turn 23 we settled at a draw, as whomever advanced against the others well-established lines stood a good chance of being thoroughly chewed over.

Match ended early due to Greg's busy schedule. Not much action had taken place yet. |

Rich and I had a maneuver battle this time. Lots of positioning but only a few areas of combat as Rich shortened and tightened his defensive lines, while my forces were too spread out to gain local superiority anywhere.

Oh ... How does Alex make my brain go dead! I was playing this very cautious as the Rebs, concentrating my infantry in the S-W corner of the map. As I pulled back my cav screen, I left a huge hole that Alex immediately sprung through.
He captured 14 of my cav guns, killed around 400 cav troopers, and left another 1000 isolated, awaiting destruction on the next turn.
If you haven't played Alex, do! He is excellent!

Alex once again bested me! All of our action occured in the bottom SW area of the map. Alex captured a 200 man cav unit that I stupidly left exposed. That put me into the negative victory area.
He then had seemed to switch to the defensive (after pummeling me with some very effective combined arms infantry and artillery fire). But, as I moved up to try to even the score some, he launched a quick counter-attack, brilliantly exploiting an opening, and capturing 500 plus infantry. This moved the victory to decisive in his favor.
At this point, there was no hope of me changing the victory level. Alex accepted my sword so we could move to the mirror game. |

A very cautious game throughout the first half, about 2/3 of the way through the game was still a draw. Then, while I was advancing both flanks for a double envelopment, I left my center weak and Rich struck with a heavy attack. After losing some artillery, I recalled my wings and was able to hit both flanks of his advancing wedge and drive it back. I then continually pressed his line, slowly and methodically until his position resembled a circle atop the high ground in the center of the map. A late counterattack didn't get Rich any points back so we agreed to end the game. Ended up around -700 points for a maj. union victory. |
