The Croats planted their pillboxes, trenches and foxholes in the large grain field and setup concealed and entrenched, with a smaller number of units in the woods on the western side of board 38. Initial Prep Fire from the Croats had no effect, but the return fire from the Partisans was deadly. My mortar on the board 42 hill went on a ROF tear and took 10 shots at the Croats in the woods, breaking 1.5 squads and causing a CR. The Partisan sniper then eliminated the Croat 8-1 leader in the grain trench system and broke both of the squads he was stacked with. And then on Partisan Turn 1, one Partisan Squad and two Partisan Half-Squads which had setup on the board 42 level 1 hills, managed to eliminate a HS in CC (Partisan Squad going in at 2:1 and gaining ambush) and the two HSs re-DMed the Croat brokies, which eventually led to their elimination for FTR by turn 2 and the elimination in CC of the 7-0 in the woods who was hoping to rally them. By turn 3, all Croat hopes were extinguished and only a remant of the original paratroop force was still alive to surrender to the Partisans.

I was able to block the last minute dash for the Ammo Supplies with a number of Croat broken units so that, despite some bold and brave Partisan moves on the last turn and two buildings having already been captured, the Ammo dumps remained in Croat hands despite having Partisans end the MPh adjacent to three ammo dumps (one adjacent Partisan pinned).

Small scenario, therefore dicey (as expected), but fast and fun. Malfed my first Marder on its first shot, then had to take a risk with the other to try and get back into the scenario and malfed it on its second shot (Intensive Fire). With both of my Marders out of commission by the end of Turn 2, I did the honourable thing and handed in my resignation! :-)

Russians waltzed into the railway station on Turn 1, with most of the German occupants broken from FPF or Advancing Fire and destined to surrender during the next Rally Phase. That wouldn't have been the end quite yet, but Rob moved his guys across to cover and allowed me to dance 3 MMC and a leader onto the board at GG0 and race down below the road without ever being spotted or capable of being fired on that turn. With the railway station by this stage solidly in Russian control, and 3 MMC already below the road, we agreed to end the game with a German surrender.

In short, the German *must* guard against the possibility of a flanking run. Would have been interested to see how this one played out, especially as I had swapped both the Russian 8-0 and 8-1 for 9-0 and 10-0 commisars. That makes for a very solid Russian leadership team (9-2 for fire direction, two commisars for rallying and maintaining control of whatever building is captured, the 7-0 to help race guys down to the road).

I suspect this one might well become a tournament favourite in time to come. Fast and furious, and lots of potential for maneuveur.

Went down to the wire. Very narrow German win 13 VP to 12 VP, after 3.5 squads of Germans raced through two firelanes and FT 12 residual (which burned a German tank in the last turn) to make it to the road!

This is a great scenario, but the Russians in this playing got overwhelmed by a rushed German attack. The russians broke practically every MG they possessed, generated two German heros and a few snipers to boot. In the end, there was just nobody left to defend the village.

The Russian Gun is key to this scenario in some ways. Without the Gun, the Russians don't have a chance. But it is a thorn in the German's side. I set the Gun up in the Pillbox on the hill in H2 (CA H3/I3) with boresighting on the bridge. Conscripts in the F5/G5/G6 woods with commisar to rally, and the remaining guys mostly in the village with the exception of a HS with Lt. Mortar in H4 which had H7 boresighted.

Sadly for the German advance, the Russian Gun pretty much took the attack to pieces. It ended up taking out all the German AFV's one by one, although they did provide useful cover on the bridge for the attacking infantry. It is basically hit/kill for most of the AFV. But the Gun also proved invaluable for attacking moving infantry, with an IFT attack of 12+0 when it hits.

The last ditch German assault on the last half-turn got pulled up short with PBF for a Russian win. I'm wondering if, given my setup all near the bridge, the Germans might have done better ignoring the bridge and village and setting up to enter near P10/Q10/R10 and just making a run for the board edge. Would have caught me with my pants down a little and I would have had to have been racing guys eastwards at top speed to try to interdict, while the German AFVs could have then raced into the village to bother my attempt to maneuvure. Anyway, just a thought. As it stands, unless the Gun breaks I think a frontal assault is going to struggle.

The Hungarian tin cans were all dead by game end, but provided some useful smoke to enable safer infantry movement across streets. Of course, the smoke came from brewed up tanks, not from any fitted smoke dispensers!

The Germans executed a fighting withdrawl, although the Hungarians entered into two Melee's that lasted several turns and kept more troops from withdrawing. Only about 3 Hungarian squads and two 7-0's survived the scenario and made it into the building, but a complicated move managed to eliminate a number of broken Germans in the victory building and seal the win.
