Compass Rose comments: Poor. Well below average.
This scenario is listed as historical, and it played out that way too; with the Americans winning.
The biggest problem I found playing this battle is that it is very boring. The second problem I found is that the Mexicans have no chance to win. There are no victory hexs and the supplies that could be captured from the Americans, are only worth 1 point per wagon. The only thing the American forces have to do is reload and fire. For them, its like shooting fish in a barrel. In the end, the Mexican forces suffered 243 casualties, while the American force only suffered 30 casualties.
I’m not sure if the Mexican Army could do anything even if more forces were added to the Mexican Side.

I don't even think those supply wagons were worth one point. |

I played as the Americans. I started the battle with what appeared to be less troops then the red coats, however I held the high ground. The battle started well however, it didn't take long before things started going "south" for me. I kept having a reoccurring right flank problem of my troops getting routed which opened up some holes for the enemy to penetrate. This also compounded my problems since the routing was occurring on the high ground of the battle. In the end, the red coats prevailed.

This one is probably pretty finely balanced. I am not the most practiced of 1776 players, but I had recently had the pleasure of having this scenario as my training scenario for CCC (which did manage to knock off a fair bit of rust).
As such, as the British player in this series - and particularly this one- the optimal position to find yourself in is one where you can form up into a line and simply push ahead. American militia is not much of a match for the British bayonet equipped troops; and they tend to run. Now, the American player has to allow for this, as when they do run, they can screw up a decent defense and cause all kinds of havoc. And in this case I guess they must have. The real key to this scenario is the vp hexes, as the vp levels are such that you need one to get a victory, even if you just trade losses at anywhere close to a 1:1 ratio with your Colonial opponent. Conversely- holding the vp hexes is the prime objective of the American player. In my case I lined up and simply bulled foward. As long as you don't lose a leader (assuming you are playing with vp's for leader loses selected), you can gain a minor victory.
The difference in this particular match between a minor victory and a major victory was cavalry management. I don't recommend trying end-arounds in this match unless you know where your opponent's cavalry is. In this case, an attempt at causing some havoc behind my own lines ended up with the Colonials losing enough of their mounted me to tip the balance over the major victory line. Cavalry aren't really all that effective in the EAW series so it is probably best to keep them well back and used only for countering -well, the other guy's cavalry... trying not to lose them seems to be the major goal here. |

Unfortunately, the game had a few bugs which affected game play. The game showed each side getting reinforcements however, the reinforcements showed arriving on a different date than the date of the one day battle. Secondly, the Rebs had units that were fixed the whole game which were needed badly by the Reb player (me). |

This one seems to require a bit of a pre-PBEM play through on the Germans part -as the pace the German player needs to establish and maintain is pretty stringent. I had no real idea where the Germans would drop in -aside from the general Maleme area (and that there'd be Mountain Troops would be landing there.) So I sorta "ringed the wagons' -or VP areas that I had left. It felt like main push was made along the road to Canea... I did not do much better while playing the AI ... May not be the most balanced of scenarios - but it might also have been mutual lack of familiarity -and over cautiousness then poses more of a hurdle for the attacker. |

This one is a race to exit as many units as possible; there is a subplot where the Italian Ariete Armoured Division has a go at the bir Hacheim fortifications as well -however I am not at all positive that they could take that area in the 8 turns allotted -so it might be better to have them sit out - or take on the scattered British/Indian units to the East -while keeping the Free French busy -by just being around.
The German forces- well initially the entire situation is very scattered and disorganised -probably for both side - however, - if you keep your forces together and avoid getting stalled by the temptation to go toe to toe with the Allied armored units that you will run into - and stay focused -you have a shot at getting enough units off board in the relatively short amount of time that you are given.
This one has a fairly large map board for an 8 turn scenario.

As noted before -this one is not that balanced - however Arckon, being new -and having played the Soviets before -and my knowing I did not really do a whole lot as the German player --- wanted him to see that there was a difference in army style (German vs Soviet), as well as attack vs defense (in this case defending being the easier task -than assaulting a stretched but fortified line of defense with a turn limit that did not allow my flexibility.
That being said, I got my arse handed to me as the Soviets- which I freely admit to not being that versed in Soviet offensive skill -- or in other words -in 1942 with me as Soviet commander... "Tovarish -- it is gonna be a long Spring/Summer" -Ok seriously, I know it is all about practice -and I am hoping I am better at the non-Soviet-German titles. |

This was Arck's first shot at a PBEM PzC game - playing the Soviets in this one seems to be a tough chore for even an experienced player - it is an assault on a foritfied, but thinly held German line; but the main ally of the German player is that it is only 6 turns - there is no room for error. I'm hoping Arck gives me a shot as the Soviet - mainly so he can see how different an experience defeinding in this scneario can be.
This is not the most balanced scenario; and imo favors the Germans.

I'd argee with Danny - although I would like a shot at the other side of the lines -- Anzio scenarios, at least the couple of different ones have a very different tempo than the other games in this series. I really wanted to find something like a medium length landing scenario - but couldn't in the Salerno set.
If the game went another 24 hours I was in some serious trouble - much more than the Germans faced in real life.
dannybou comments: Average. A solid scenario.
The game is very tough for the Allies. Moving inland, it is facing crack german units and they are very well entrenched. Several strongpoints have a whopping 90% defensive bonus. |

The Allies are superior troops. All for the German 6th FJ regiment who, if in position around the Carentan area can, slow down and even stop the Allied breakthrough. I found myself fiecely assaulting the bridge at Carentan and the town otself. Not until the last turn was I able to score a decisive victory. Steve played his defensive campaign very well. |

Playing the Germans it is imperative to hold the Allies in their areas and defend across the river. Since there are only 6 turns in this scenario, the pressure is on the Allies to break the German defenses.
