This time MrMox and I switched sides and I played Bluefor. There were a couple mistakes I made with my artillery that initially hurt me. The game was going along with me taking some serious losses but dishing out a fair bit until my reinforcements arrived. My opponent had the luck to recieve two additional airstrikes in time for my reinforcements and the skill and knowledge to time them so that the first strike spotted my units enabling the second strike to inflict maximun damage.....which it did. That one airstrike I think took out more vehicles than any other that I can remember any other strike doing in my TacOps experience. In the end I should have dispersed my infantry slightly different with engagements set to 101 meters to maximize survival and ambush impact and hope for a draw if things turn out badly for your armor as it did for me.

Moved 2/3 of my force throught the northern wadi towards the bridge, 1/3 throught the central wadi towards the southern bridges. Arty took its toll on my forces, and small enemy units kept popping up, making it tough going. My initial airstrikes were timed to arrive when blue got his helos - one helo was destroyed by an airstike, the other in turn 16 by SAM. At that point I has gotten two extra airstrikes. They were positioned against the western edge (to arrive at turns 20 & 21), and I also began plotting TRP's there. The idea was to spot and attack blue forces while they where still bunched up. That succeeded very well, and the rest of the game was mostly a matter of mopping up blue forces around the southern bridges. |

First 20 turns I was on the defensive, trying to do as much damage as possible to red with arty.
After my reinforcements arrived, I started a push for the southern bridges, but never got close to the northern bridge.

I started off across the high ground and got some early hits in against his units there. Artillery worked me over pretty good. The opponent used some infantry in scouting positions that effectively were TK teams. That hurt. Infantry with RPGs can't hit the broad side of a barn, should scale back the engagement ranges for infantry some in the future.
Ended up taking the bridges which was a good thing. Bluefor wiped out my forces on the southern bridge and were working on those of the middle bridge. As I had no effective tank killers he probably would have wiped me out entirely with an additional 15-20 minutes with his two remaining tanks. Ouch. I'll claim draw and sit back on the belief that reinforcements for red will show up before Bluefor to make good my 90% loss, ouch, ouch. |

Played as red. Spread out all across the setup zone. Blue attacked in the south. I was able to shift my arty (avoiding the 2 minute delay) and use ICM on blue's position, which caused a lot of blue casualties. Later blue attacked with 4 tanks in the same place. ICM took out 3 of the tanks after which blue resigned.

My simplistic plan as Red was to advance to contact with one brigade to the north and two down south. My opponent appears to have massed his forces in the south while maintaining a screening force to the north. My brigade in north met some light recon elements and air cav. My first brigade to cross the river down south was caught in a TAI while crossing. While being supressed at the bridge, was confronted with Marco's main force. Net Result = Brigade lost. Marco then was able to cross in force, and bypass my second brigade and get into my rear area. My northern brigade belatedly made a disjointed attempt to attack south into Marco rear area, but he displayed a much finer DA -appreciation of the mass (interior lines), economy of force/security, movement and surprise.

My plan was to go Northeast and cut Rob's forces off from his supply units and then move south to trap him in the 2 main objective areas. Rob had a similar idea and our initial fight was up north. I then switched my units south to try to take the objectives, but Rob was one step ahead. Both Rob and I posted an AAR in the DA Subforum if you'd like to see more of a turn by turn account.

Played as Blue.
My goal was as per opord to seize the town of Myskina, and then prevent the enemy penetrating PL Orca. I settled for trying to hold Myskina.
My opponent reacted by attacking North, but became stuck when I took out the bridges through BAI. We then had a scrap for the City, but I had two BDEs to his one, and he lost that fight. I managed to use my air assets effctively, and my attack helos caused a bit of trouble.
Play was abandoned on turn 10, due to opponents irreversible position, plus some bugs in the game engine that became apparent.

The scenario was played as is with no modifications. The helo support was hard on the red team right from the beginning until I managed to get them both shot down. John made a standard approach to the town and almost succeded with one tank penetrating into the objective area on the last turn (at least it looked like it did) only to get taken out with a flank shot by an AT-4, making it a blue victory. Fun game.

Well this was Dennis C. Huff first time trying a PBEM. He was playing on the OPFOR side and I was on the BLUFOR side.
I moved out my units an 13xM1A1 Tank Company plus a platoon of mech infantry. Thinking that he would have some units on the outskirts of the town in the center of the map I moved out cautiously. After I registered a TRP I placed smoke on the outskirts of the town to mask my units moving into the town. After entering the town and noticed that there was no enemy units in the town. I moved on out and was engaged by his 4xT80s at the edge of the hill on the outskirts of the town as I was leaveing it.
I destoryed three of them and he pulled back. Now the time was running out for me because I had to get my units off the east edge of the map and I had very little time left. So I placed my tank plt in front of the rest of my convoy and proceed down the long valley to the edge of the map. As I was moving I was placing smoke rounds ahead of my forward units to try to mask the movenment. I then ran into his tank guns and destoryed them as my tanks kept rolling.
Well I was able to get only my forward tank plt off the map but ran out of time to complete the mission. So as for the game I lost. But I took out most of his fighting capabilites.
Over all a fun battle with Dennis.

As John indicated we modified the OOB somewhat. I added T-12's with Trucks and RPG teams and did not use artillery support. The Red setup was also not tied to the original setup area. I had RPG teams in the woods to detect any movement that way. The T-12's were set up north of the road heading off map east. They were situated on the high ground to fire across the open high ground but were able to fire into the low ground as well. I put entrenchments along the east edge of the town thinking John might see them and slow down :>). I avoided the town and set up the T-80's east of it. To detect/screen movement through/around the town. Not a bad plan I thought.
John did take a while to move into contact using lots of smoke and pounding the town. I had orders for my Tanks to pop smoke and retreat uphill but most were knocked out before they could do so.
John then did the one thing I did not expect him to and drove up the road. He got the drop on the AT guns and knock them out, only suffering one loss.
I won by one minute. If he had 21 minutes instead of 20 the victory would have been his. |
