Re: Heelllp

open the registry editor (regedit.exe)
look for hkey current user key
in there look for a sub tree called software, inside there is an other subkey called \TalonSoft\The Operational Art of War, CW

you must find there 2 other sub level
.....\Software\TalonSoft\The Operational Art of War, CW\game_path"
and
.....\Software\TalonSoft\The Operational Art of War, CW\cd_path"

verify that both path inside these keys are the correct ones. If not do the right click and ask to modify it, and type the correct path, there is no need to reboot.

Look too the there is a nocd subdirectory inside your COW application with a TOAWintro.smk file in it.

Re: Heelllp

You shouldn't have to modify the registry. CoW was able to work on XP just fine.
At this point, if I was you, I'd uninstall everything, then re-install the game from the setup exe and then re-install the patch, and then the nodc patch.
I know when I installed it on my XP (and now my Vista machine) I didn't have to do anything with the registry.

Failing that I wish I had your PC in front of me so I could get it installed, or even an XP machine to do tests on. Unfortunately, the pond is in the way, and I have no XP machines left.

Neither. About having to get into the registry. As Veers says, it works just fine on XP. No special work involved. I have it on three XP machines with just the normal install process as Veers suggests. Going into the registry is just asking for trouble, IMO.

Not if you are not playing with dangerous keys.

In this case it is just a question of path verification, nothing else nothing more.

if TOAW stop at launch it is often because he didn't find the path to the nocd subdirectory, this one is strored in the registry, open regedit go to hkey_currentuser\Software\TalonSoft\The Operational Art of War
inside there are 2 keys with the correct path of ACOW and the nocd directory

Re: Heelllp

Thanks for all your replies.

Just to clarify.
I have been running COW on both XP pro and home edition computers since 2003, with no problems. I have installed it from both USB drives and CDs earlier witout problems previously. I am currently running XP home edition SP 3 on a macbook pro identical to the one I had previously (the limonade casualty). But I have been unable to install COW. Until tonight.

I did as proposed and removed the program and tried a reinstall from both of my CD backups. (first one then the other, both have worked before). No joy.

I then went down of my basement and opened the secret hatch to my vault. I took out my air gun and loaded double doses of thiopentothal (a strong sedative). I then went to the room were the two guard tigers are kept chained. I shot them and waited until both were sleeping. I walked past their still bodies and entered the 128 digit code on the lock to the inner vault. I used a 5 meter lever to shift the two tonne lid off the sarcophagus. I then used my katana to cut through the 2 inch wrapping around my original COW disc. Wearing gloves and and a mask (lest the moisture from my breath corrupt the surface if the disc) I the inserted the disc into my laptop.

Est Voila. It worked.

Thanks for your patience and helpfull comments.
Please expect a slight delay in my replies as it will take me a little while to rewrap the disc, replace the lid, lock the vault door and revive the tigers.
