    Ambuscade for the Illustrious
    Author: Herman Hum

    Scenario Start: April, 15th, 1991, 2300

    Side: USSR

I start vectoring both subs into the area marked by four refpoints. The hostile carrier
group is somewhere in this area.

23:35 - the Oscar detects a faint airborne contact.

The Oscar is heading North in order to avoid this airborne
    contact.

Both the Oscar and Victor are set to deep depth and remain
    creeping at 5 knots.

The Oscar has run into a buoy! Change course to
    the South.

Faint skunk contact close to the unknown air
contact and the buoy. It has already become
clear that the Oscar faces heavy difficulties in order to break through the
    hostile screen.

00:15 A second skunk is detected, close to
the first one. Is that the Illustrious group?

One identified as a type 42.3 Manchester. Here
    we are.

Set the Victor to cruise speed. It comes from the Southwest and will take
its time to reach the critical area.

The next buoy is dropped close to the Oscar.

A boogie is detected close to my Victor. Was cruise speed too fast? Is the Victor that loud?

The second skunk is identified as a Type 22.2 Boxer.

Well, the Oscar is only about 10 to 12 nm away from those ships. Should
I attack them right now? No, not allowed. It´s only 01:06 and I have to wait
    until 03:00.

A buoy is dropped close to the Victor.

The Victor is too far away. I reset speed to
15 knots, the Oscar has slowed to 2 knots, trying
to crawl around the hostile fortress.

02:05 No change so far. The subs seem to have evaded for now.

02:35 Three surface contacts by now. Only one clearly identified.

    02:48 Contact! The Illustrious!

03:00 War has begun. The Oscar comes up to shallow
depth, then to periscope depth. Bot I cannot fire
the Shipwreck missiles. Why? Distance is about 8 nm.

Already to close for the SS-19? I decide not to come closer
and go for a torpedo attack since I have to
preserve the Oscar for future ops. Thus I drive
it Eastward until the distance is large enough
    for the Shipwreck missile.

Meanwhile the Victor II stumbles in another wall of buyos.
There seems to be another Manchester FFG, screening the
    group to the Southwest.

Seems there are two ships patrolling in the Southwest: a
    Manchester and an Amazon.

03:55 The Oscar now is far enough away to fire
Shipwrecks. Though the contact is not really
good, I´ll fire one missile in order to stir
    the Illustrious up.

    03:57 Missile underway

03:58 Missile downed. At least the vessels now
    have their radars up.

04:38 The RN is heading Westward. My subs follow,
trying not to come too close and sailing not
too fast, e.g. being not too noisy.

05:17 Fired a second missile in order to stir
up the carrier group. There they are. Rather
    close to the Victor.

05:56 Clear fix on the Illustrious. Six Shipwrecks underway.

06:16 One hit on the Illustrious!

Meanwhile the Victor has raced into an
attacking position and starts shooting torps
    at the carrier.

06:25 Several hits - the Illustrious is sinking!

The Victor does not survive its greatest day
for much longer. Several torp hits kill it.

06:28 The Oscar changes course towards its
    egress refpoint.

Here an unhandled exception error ocurred -
    very sad.

Anyway - that was a victory, wasn´t it?

Thanks for sharing your wonderful AAR. It seems as though you did all the right things needed for victory. It is too bad that you hit a CTD. It happens for a variety of known (and unknown) reasons. The safest work-around is just to save the game every so often. I think that it is also possible to set an autosave for H3, but I've never used it. I just hit File Save command every so often.

For future reference, it is possible for you to fire both your torpedoes on Bearing-Only-Launch [BOL] mode by using the Ctrl+F1 key and selecting an activation point. That way, if you find yourself at 8nm range in the future, you can still attack.

Great AAR, and it was a victory indeed.
