    Paper Army......WTF?

    Hey All:

Reaquainting myself with ASL this weekend. Played Paper Army from starter kit#2. The Italians have to move all the way across the board, in the face of vastly superior Greeks, who are then reinforced to be of parity in numbers to the Italians.

Anyone have any ideas on what the Italians should do in this scenario? ROAR has it at about 3:1 for the Greeks.

It looks pretty darn impossible to me, or at least isn't a beginner scenario at all.

Move as fast and as far as you can. Leave a few units behind to slow down the Greeks (don't you have a heavy MG?) and then use your superior force to take on the inferior reinforcements. Not easy but sometimes the scenarios are about teaching how to deal with something or a concept. This one teaches you how to move in the face of an enemy. Seems sort of like a necessary skill set to me (call it "beginners" if you want to).

You get a MMG as the italians. It starts the game malfunctioned.

How does leaving units behind slow down the Greeks? They're between you and the exit board edge.

IIRC...been a while since I played starter kit....the map starts empty. The Italians enter on the east edge on turn1, then in greek turn1 the main greek force enters on the east edge with half MF. The greek reinforcements that enter between you and the exit edge are only 3 squads strong, and may not appear until turn4 (I think).

You need to leave a rearguard behind to slow the main greek force and still have strength enough to fight past the 3 squad blocking force. It is tough bearing in mind if your guys break you can't usually get them back in time - but there is lots of grain on the board and the Greek firepower/range values aren't great. It's certainly doable - you don't have to exit that many VP if I remember rightly.

OK, maybe I was playing it wrong. We started late. I'll have to check the scenario card.

I had the italians enter from east edge and the greeks from the west. If you're right I screwed that up big time.

    Things I know for sure:
The Greek reinforcements can enter from either the north or south side.

You have to get 10VP off of the board.

Reading comprehension on the scenario card is a GREAT lesson for a beginner. LOL!

It really is a GREAT lesson. Always keep in mind what you are doing and what it takes to win. I remember one game I was playing where I though the river was unfordable...yeah, no. I set up all of my meager defense against the bridge. My opponent comes up the backside. ARGGGHHH. If he wasn't such a slow (ie. overly cautious) player, he would have splatted me earlier than the last turn. Sigh.

I generally read the VC, SSRs and reinforcement entrance areas aloud with my opponent present and pointing at the map as appropriate, so as to increase the odds that we both understand them. That doesn't stop me from messing up, but it helps.
