    More Brutal: World War 1 or World War II?

    Hi-

    Which war military wise was more brutal and murderious?

    I would have to say WW I just because of the use of Chemical weapons, why the Germans did not use chem weapons in WW II is kinda strange.

    There are claims that the Japanese used them in both China and Burma; in Burma they were antitank ampoules, I believe?

    I do believe that the Germans used chemical weapons in WWII, mostly nerve agents.
    But death replied: ‘I choose him.’ So he went,
    And there was silence in the summer night;
    Silence and safety; and the veils of sleep.
    Then, far away, the thudding of the guns

    Really? Any documentation on this? If so it would be nice chrome to add to a scenario design. The only place I know of where the Germans did use chemical agents was in Arnham with captured WP grenades.

    only about 11 million documents, the deaths of Hitler's "enemies" in the death camps.

    Bradley in his book comments on the fear of the allies of a German use nerve agents on thier troops, and likewise stockpiled Chemical weapons themselves

    it is difficult to seperate civilian and Military applications in a totalitarianian regieme such as the Third Reich.

    The Germans used great quantities of White Phosphorous in fortress reduction at the battle of Sevastapol in 1942.

    Re: More Brutal: World War 1 or World War II?

    "The total number of casualties in World War I, both military and civilian, were about 37 million: 16 million deaths and 21 million wounded. The total number of deaths includes 9.7 million military personnel and about 6.8 million civilians. The Entente Powers (also known as the Allies) lost 5.7 million soldiers and the Central Powers about 4 million.

    World War II casualty statistics vary greatly. Estimates of total dead range from 50 million to over 70 million. The sources cited on this page document an estimated death toll in World War II of roughly 73 million, making it the deadliest war ever. Civilians killed totaled around 47 million, including 20 million from war-related disease and famine. Total military dead: about 25 million, including deaths in captivity of about 4 million prisoners of war. Axis dead: approximately 11 million; Allied dead: about 61 million.

    The 1918 flu pandemic (commonly referred to as the Spanish flu) was an influenza pandemic that spread to nearly every part of the world. It was caused by an unusually virulent and deadly Influenza A virus strain of subtype H1N1. Historical and epidemiological data are inadequate to identify the geographic origin of the virus. Most of its victims were healthy young adults, in contrast to most influenza outbreaks which predominantly affect juvenile, elderly, or otherwise weakened patients. The flu pandemic has also been implicated in the sudden outbreak of Encephalitis lethargica in the 1920s.

    The pandemic lasted from March 1918 to June 1920, spreading even to the Arctic and remote Pacific islands. It is estimated that anywhere from 50 to 100 million people were killed worldwide, or the approximate equivalent of one third of the population of Europe."
