    Warhammer Online Release Date Set

    Warhammer Online's release date has been set:

    Hot on the heels of spectacular showings at E3 and Comic-Con, Mythic Entertainment, an Electronic Arts Inc. studio, today announced that fans will be able to enter the gritty fantasy world of Warhammer® Online: Age of Reckoning™ (WAR) on September 18th, 2008 when the highly-anticipated MMORPG goes live. After three years in development by Virginia-based Mythic Entertainment, WAR will open its North American, European and Oceanic servers and offer players a variety of flexible subscription options. Gamers who pre-order WAR in North American will enjoy special benefits including open beta admission, a live game head start, and bonus in-game items.
    You can read the rest here.

    The pricing seems a bit higher than other MMOs:

    * Monthly Subscription: $14.99 USD
    * 3-Month Subscription: $41.97 ($13.99 per month)
    * 6-Month Subscription: $77.94 ($12.99 per month)

    I hope the game lives up to the hype. I just tried Lord of the Rings Online and found that that game did not live up to the hype - it was little more than a refined version of WoW with a strong PvR element. Yawn.

    I am going to preorder this here in a few days.

    But I totally disagree with you on LOTRO. I main complaint with the game would be the less than informative quest log and all the world is so large, takes awhile to get anywhere.

    What did you think was so different about LoTRO?

    I was afraid that you were going to ask that, lol.

    My issue isn't really with your opinion, but rather it was a knee-jerk reaction to LOTRO being compared to WoW. It's an unfortunate side affect of the success of WoW that games are being compared to it, and not just MMO's. I read that some fans of Diablo are upset because DIII looks like WoW, which it doesn't in my mind.

    I really like LOTRO, and had an active sub till the end of June, but my interest in MMO's has dipped a little recently. I like the graphical look of the game, the quests are really well done, the subject matter is great, and for the most part the community is much more mature.

    WoW is a very good game, but my issues with it really have to do with the end game portion. I enjoy leveling a toon, doing PvP, but once I hit 70, it was kind of boring. If it wasn't for WAR coming soon, I would probably jump back in WoW.

    And what does "PvR" stand for? I know "PvP", but not that one...

    I completely agree with you on these points. But my problem with both WoW and LOTRO is the fundamental gameplay. Both are quest-driven games where you need to level-up by slaying a gazillion monsters. That type of gameplay always bored me because it becomes so repetitive fast. Worse, the combat system, whereby you click little buttons to execute attacks, also bores the heck out of me. I realize these elements are staples of the MMORPG genre, but I just can't get past them.

    I think that is why EVE is the only MMO that has ever held my attention. While there are quests (missions) in EVE, you don't have to do them if you don't want to. Heck, you never have to kill another living thing if you don't want to because leveling is about training a skill rather than combat-based experience points. And while you do need to click buttons to fire your weapons, it does makes a heck of a lot more sense in a sci-fi MMO than in a MMORPG.

    Person versus Realm. In LOTRO, all human players fight against the AI-driven realm of Mordor and not against each other.

    Ahhh, I've only heard it called Monster Play, which is something I haven't tried.

    One of the reasons why I miss old Star Wars Galaxies is because the game was a skill based point system with no character levels. It was awesome because you could mix and match any professions you wanted in the old days ...
