I was thinking of having a crack at caves, probably that one from Gung Ho. Is there a good cheat sheet, example of play or primer out there for free download?
And do many players do caves?

Journal 2 has an article on them. It also has Kakazu Ridge with some really cool cave scenarios.

Any thoughts too on whether novice caveman should attack or defend?

I prefer to take the cave defender as the experienced player. The attacker doesn't need to know the complete cave rules, just the differences when attacking. Most of the attacker's work is plain old ASL: smoke, build firegroup, fire at cave at +4, repeat. The more complicated forms of attack (climbing to drop DCs, throwing DCs, etc) seem to me to be not the way most of the work gets done, so if the attacker doesn't use them, it doesn't damage the scenario that much. On the other hand, the defender has to fully understand the cave rules during setup.
But if an eager recruit wants to try his hand, of course he may.

Over the summer I introduced a player to the cave rules with one of the Kakazu Ridge scenarios. I was the Japanese caveman. The cave rules that the American player needed to know well were about how to place a DC in a cave, whether the cave was occupied or not. Also, the effects of firing a FT into a cave and how the roasting is shared with the connecting caves. He didn't get a chance to throw WP into a cave, but that rule isn't a bad one to familiarize yourself with either.
Unfortunately, 'Turning Off The Spigot' and 'The Gorge' are pro-Japanese big time. Is there a 'balanced' small cave scenario out there?
