    Newb Help!

Okay here's the scenario. I download VASL using the link on the vasl.org page and everything works great including all the extensions I've down loaded. Scenarios load and work fine as well. My problems begin when I turn off my laptop or switch ISP's from work to home or vica versa. When I restart my laptop my VASL shortcut on my desktop loses its image, and when I try to click it VASL will not load and I get this error message:

    Unable to load application

CouldNotLoadArgumentException[ Could not load file/URL specified: C:\Documents and Settings\Bill\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\57\7aa152f9-317f0f5f]
    at com.sun.javaws.Main.launchApp(Unknown Source)
    at com.sun.javaws.Main.continueInSecureThread(Unknown Source)
    at com.sun.javaws.Main$1.run(Unknown Source)
    at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)

Now I have to go the VASL.org and download the app again and then everything works fine as long as I don't turn off my laptop or switch ISP's.

    Thanks in Advance

What version of Java are you running? You can find out via your File->Preferences in javaws, or with java-version at the command line.

Are you launching vasl via the desktop shortcut? If so, when that fails with the above error, try launching vasl from the command line with 'javaws http://www.vasl.org/ws/vasl.jnlp'.

    obs,
Okay I replaced the command line with the one you provided and that works. Downloads ver. 4.1.8 not 5. How do I get it to download ver 5? And what it does do though is go the vasl site and downloads the app again. Is this what its suppose to do?

On this page - http://vasl.org/download.htm - try the "For a non-updating purely local installation, download and double-click on" part. That might be what you want.

I don't think this is the prob - that'll give him the 'VASLeer' version of v5.7, which must be opened by starting VASSAL v2.8.

The command-line 'javaws http://www.vasl.org/ws/vasl5.jnlp' would prob'ly give the path to a web 're-install' of v5.7, instead of v4.1.8.

I've had some probs lately, I think b/c the installer under Java 6 don't seem to update the VASL desktop-shortcut. This prob might be compounded by comizzar's switching between home & office usernames, home & office ISPs, and/or home & office firewalls.

But it's clear from the error-msgs that comizzar's shortcut is pointing to an invalid location.

Bill, can you open your 'Java Cache Viewer'? In a WinOS, that'd be Start > Settings > Control Panell > Java, General tab > Temporary Internet Files section > View button.

Bog only know what you'll see in there, hopefully there's at least one entry named 'VASL 5.0'. Highlight & right-click/delete all instances of 'VASL 5.0' except for the most-recent-date one. Go back to your desktop & delete the existing VASL shortcut, then return to the Java Cache Viewer, highlight & right-click your remaining 'VASL 5.0' entry, then select 'Install Shortcuts', which should put a new valid shortcut on your desktop.

hth, let me know if this works for you, before/after you've changed your 'identities'.

    obs & Counterman,

Thanks for all the assistance. I checked the Java Cache and sure enough it had two instances of VASL one for 4.8 and one for 5.0. I deleted the 4.8 one and then went and deleted the shortcut on the desktop. I then made a new shortcut for the 5.0 version. That SEEMED to fix the problem. BUT what I did find out is that my system scrubber was erasing my Java cache before my system shutdown and hence rendering my VASL shortcut inop. Now it works fine, I think. It still connects to the internet and checks the files before launching the VASL is this normal?

heh, that'll cause a slight prob fer sure!

Well I don't think it's normal, but I've several times had this thing where a new install will check on the web at startup the 1st coupla' times, before it 'settles down' to being 'normal'. Just more mystery, but I suspect that the thing is needing to finish some web-install routines.

rk is gonna run a check on the whole web-install thing before we let v5.8 loose, but some things are beyond his control, since he must rely on the available tools in Java6.
