    Book Recommendations

    Hi All,

In addition to playing ASL I love to read. Not only WWI/II but also Vietnam and modern warfare. Infantry, naval, air war --- all of interest. I prefer non-fiction, not heavy on the analysis, something that is an enjoyable read. Some of what I've read lately include:

    Soldat
    Rumour of War
    Iron Coffins
    With the Old Breed
    Cross of Iron
    Under the Wire

    Any recommendations???

It would be nice to see a sticky thread with links to book recommendations/reviews. Anyone know if anything like this exisits??

    Thanks in advance!

    Cheers,

    Brad

War without Garlands and It never snows in September by Robert J Kershaw.

Wonderful books with a good insight into the actual fighting men.

I finally got around to reading An Army at Dawn by Rick Atkinson recently. Very good, IMO. I'm very much looking forward to the next volume in this set due in October.

I Posted In The Wrong Forum by John E. Canuck
Please Ban The Frigging Canuckistanians by Bill Psycho
It's Not Off Topic If I Say It First by Dr. G. Houseman

You may enjoy Steven E.Ambrose's work.Band of Brothers is excellent as well as Citizen Soldiers. His book on Pegasus Bridge realy gives a good account of the battle.
Also try; In Deadly Combat:A German Soldier's Memoir of the Eastern Front,by Gottlob Bidermann. He was a Gunner of a Pak 40 around Lenningrad. He also served with Armee Gruppe South before that. It's a very good account of an infantry soldier in the German Wehrmacht.
What are you sitting here for reading this.Get on Amazon.com and start ordering!!!

    Two Appleman Books

I recommend two Roy Appelman books:

South to the Naktong, North to the Yalu.

    East of Chosin.

Both books cover the Korean war, and they are very well written.

If you have never read anything about the Korean War, these two books SHOULD be on your reading list.

I am enjoying "Battalion of the Damned" by James Christ. It is about the 1st Marine Parachute Battalion and the action they saw at Gavutu-Tanambogo and at Bloody Ridge on Guadalcanal.

There may be good scenarios for use on the Gavutu-Tanambogo overlays. Also, it rained both nights during the battle. Seems it should be included as one of the SSR's for the CG.

I don't know how well written they are, but they are interesting and certainly would be interesting to an ASL scenario designer. East of Chosin in particular is a fascinating, tragic episode.

    Hi, Brad

I know ASLers like to hear what other ASLers think and sometimes you need a book for scenario design or whatever so we'll keep this thread here

BUT, the main book thread/what are you currently reading/recommendations forum is here.

    Happy reading!
    There will be blood!
