Canelle - and why I think our new policies are better

Alright, Canelle has quit the guild. Which actually saved us a bit of trouble in the long run.

We had (as a group - Founders and Officers) decided that to increase forum participation, that everyone that was ever to be promoted had to be on the forum. Some of your suggestions were such that a monthly roll call could be an option (as was done in another guild one of you was in, etc). We also made it mandatory that Officers must be here to see the level cap, etc etc etc.

You guys have been great at this, and thanks to your participation, the forums are getting stronger everyday. We're seeing new users, more participation, and things are looking up!

But, occasionally, things like this are going to crop up. Especially as we get larger. (Over 400 members, and *45* online at once over the weekend!)

Canelle was a recruiter (Jr. Officer), and had posted here exactly once - to get her TS access. Canibis had mistakenly promoted her to senior officer (!) as he had trouble signing up for the Officer's Forum, and was not up to date on our latest policies regarding promotions. I've since talked to him, and he is on the same page for promotions now, and he knows the recent history with Canelle.

Bee has noticed on occasion that Canelle would allow her circle of friends to swear in guild, and didn't say anything to them about it, but Bee kept it to herself. However, when it came time to let Canelle know what was up with regards to Officer's participating (or at least reading) the forum, after a terse comment (I saw her write back "w/e"), Canelle ignored Bee completely, and didn't even bother to reply to polite requests to visit here, etc. She has been given a week, and still has only come to this URL once - the first and only time.

Bee attempted to talk to her again today, and was again very polite about it. (She went out of her way to try to work this out with her - all it would have taken would have been even a reasonable response, or a quick 15 second visit here, but that apparently was too much bother...)

I have a screen of some of the conversation.

I'm sorry, but we bent over backwards for her, but she's not responding in kind. She was given *every* opportunity to click the link for the forum for 2 seconds, then close the browser, which would have been enough to keep things running, but it was too much trouble. She ignored Bee repeatedly being nice to her, giving her chances to fix things, letting her know how it works.

We gave her an inch of rope, she took a mile of it, and proceeded to hang herself with it.

I'm very sorry, as I believe she was a friend of someone here, but she simply wasn't working out as an officer. She would've done great as just a normal guildie, but the attitude with someone trying to help her in her roll was also disconcerting.

She quit the guild, which, personally, I prefer to having to boot someone with that level of rank.

Guys, let me stress this - don't take this kind of thing personally, or to heart. Running this guild is not alot different from running these (and other) forums, which I have been doing in one form or another for over 22 years now. (Yes, back before even the internet - I'm old )

For our size, we are absolutely amazing. The Adult Guild Chat has calmed things down incredibly, and in my experience with having groups this large to moderate, the amazing thing isn't that we're having problems, it is, quite frankly, that we are having so few of them.

    Seriously.

We're very active, and we're growing sooo fast, it's almost scary. We're very lucky that things have gone as smoothly as they are! But one of the things I had to learn damned quick to survive doing this kind of work and not go insane is to not let any of it get to you, or to take it personally. This is a *game* - we play it for fun! We have the best guild on the server, and I genuinely enjoy most of the people that are with us - I have a great time talking with them, teaming with them, BSing with them, and I never let the nasty crap drag me down! It's the unfortunate part of being an Officer, but we're going to have to deal with it from time to time. But we have something amazing going on here, and I for one am proud as hell to be a part of it!

DethNet is raising eyebrows everywhere - we're massively popular, we're not nerely so 7EET and stuffy as most guilds, we're not filled with 12 year old know it alls that make everyone else feel like giant asses, our chat is friendly, our members are on the whole very happy to be a part of what we have going on. And, as time goes by and our levels get higher, we are totally going to own this server.

So keep your eyes focused on the positives, and don't let the occasional negative get you down. We're doing awesome, and I personally want to thank each and every one of you guys for doing such a great job - we couldn't get to where we are today without you!

A quick read over what I just posted made me add this:

This is why I beleive that our current ideas for the guild are bang on - the policies we have in place now for ranks, promotions and such will ensure that this type of situation never happens again. By definition, it can't - no one can get even close to officer level without being in the forum, and proving that they are exactly the type of people we need.

Thinking about it, it makes me realize how damned lucky we were getting all of you guys at the very beginning...
