Where to start!

Hi guys, I am a total newbie to not only TOAW but wargaming in general, apart from playing all 3 versions of Combat Mission, which I know is totally different to this game.

I have ordered the game from Take2 and it has been shipped, and I have been reading the many threads while waiting for it to arrive on my doorstep. I am fascinated by the many stories, AAR's etc, especially the EA thread (which I know will be out of my scope for some time yet) . However, the purpose of this post is to ask all the experts here for some advice on where to begin once I have the game installed on my HD. Bear in mind that I am a novice at these type of wargames, but I am looking forward immensley to getting involved, learning the game, and eventually (hopefully) playing someone at the EA scenario!

When I started playing TOAW, I was a newbie to wargaming also. I guess I'm not so much a big fan of wargaming as I am of TOAW; but then again, I've never played another wargame.

I hope you got the ACOW version. If so your first move should be to download the 1.04 patch and, if required , the nocd patch. After that, the fun begins.

Hi, thanks for the replay . I have ordered COW, but also Vol I and Vol II, as they come all together in a special edition. I also have already downloaded the patches for all versions as well as some scenario's . What I am looking for is advice on which scenario's I should play first, I guess the easiest or smallest!

I think playing Kesserine 43 as the Axis against the AI and following this guide:

is a great way to learn good habits early. I think all the essentials regarding TOAW are covered and should get you thinking in the right direction, as opposed to blindly playing without regard for game mechanics and wondering why the AI is beating you senseless.

Hi Mike, many thanks for that, I will make sure that I play that scenario first with those notes close by to help me through it

I would also add other small scenarios such as:
Arracourt
2weeks in Normandy (there are a lot of information on the scenario for you to dig into)
France 40

By trying both sides you get to leard attack and defence, and since you play both sides on the same scenario you learn the whole scenario well.

+ in warfareHQ there are tonnes of information on the game, you can also find more by googling around.

Well, I'm getting a bit hacked off, I had an email from the Take2 Store telling me my copy of the game had been shipped Priority Airmail on the 12th April 2004, 17 days later I am still waiting for it to arrive on my doorstep
