Can the Allies win at Salerno?

    Guys,
I know historically Salerno was tough going for the Allies, but the CG seems really really hard on them. Anyone have any luck as the Allies yet?
I have tried both CGs vs two separate PBEM opponents, the AI, and solitaire HTH and the Allies get pummeled every time.

I played PBEM as the Allies in one of the Anzio scenarios. Couldn't do it. The Germans are too well dug-in. Also, some of the objectives have -90% defensive bonus.... a very tough nut to crack.

Part of that might have been lack of familiarity with the strengths and weaknesses though, Danny.

Granted I am not doing much better (it would probably be a little different in the full bore landing campaign - because I think the results were more from the scenario we have been playing -than the overall situation.

The thing I found out playing the AI twice (in the landing scenario) -granted I only played the Salerno landings scenario once (part way) - is that a lot of it depends upon knowing when you have or are about to lose the initiative. Anzio (Salerno too to a certain extent) -is very different from Sicily and Normandy - in that (at least in Normandy for sure - there are a flood of reinforcements waiting to get disgorged onto the beaches) - this isn't the case with Anzio - when doing the Anzio landings - the second time through -which I as the Allies was pummeling the Germans - was because I picked out a defensive line (based upon terrain) -and dug in before I could get nailed with the counter attack - which will be coming in Anzio - simply because most of the German defenders start off map - and it is far too easy to get greedy and get in a position where you will get nailed - even though you may have advanced further than your historical counterpart.

Ok what does this say? almost nothing about Salerno - although I do know that it is possible to get too strung out on the Amalfi Coast ( the peninsula to the North of the beaches where the Rangers and Royal Marines land... a lot of VP areas are pretty tempting and you can get them -at least for awhile.

I am hoping to (after I lose or draw this current scenario with Danny) - to be able to give the full landing scenario a shot... Although fair warning - the German player probably has almost nothing to do for most of the first day - the situation is somewhat (strategically speaking) similar to Gettysburg - as it is basically a meeting engagement situation.
