    Up and Coming Players

Who were some players that you’ve played lately that impressed you with their game or style of play. There are just some guys that you know ‘get it’ when you play them. These are guys that you feel might be challenging for a championship game in a year or two if they stay the course.

    Here are mine:

Chas Argent - We played at Wild West Fest in Portland this year. We played a small scenario, so there wasn’t much opportunity to truly test his mettle over large changes in fortune, but he made the right choices, didn’t make any mistakes and played a solid game. Plus, his attending ASLOK for the third? straight year will help his game tremendously. He is the most impressive ‘newer’ player I’ve played over the past 3-4 years.

Wes Wagner - Also, played him at Wild West Fest. Knows the game, knows the rules, just needs to play against top level competition more often to raise his game. He didn’t fall for a single one of my traps, analyzed the board excellently and attacked in strength. Needs to go to ASLOK or Winter Offensive and hunt down the top players, take his lumps and learn how to play against the big boys. If he does this he has the potential to be one of the big boys.

Chris Lampley - Just started playing last year and is a habitual player on VASL. He asks the right questions, doesn’t make the same mistake twice and has raised his game tenfold over the past year. He is a Spokane player and is already beating most of the grognards here. Watch out for this guy. I give him two years tops before he starts making real noise on the tourney scene.

While I have not played him, Brad Knoll is a newer player who appears to be going in the right direction. Brad was telling me about some of the matches he played at last weekend's CASLO and given time, Brad will become a contender.

I'll second that ..... Brad's been sharpening his skills by beating up on me. His a great and patient teacher as well. I'm always amazed how he pulls out of very tricky situations ....

He'll continue to grow as a worhty opponent ....

Agree on Chas. Don't know the others.

If Chas is "up and coming" (he's been around a while....ever smelled him?), then I'd have to add Zeb Doyle. He learned to play under Marty Snow and he "got it" from the start. It was almost scary.....

Chas is not only a good player, but a nice guy.

I taught Wes everything he knows... er, wait. I taught Wes everything I know - and that's not much. But Wes is a good player.

But Robert, I'm just shocked that I didn't see my name in your list!!!! I guess that's because you didn't have a category for "Aging, over the hill Players".

I'll say. We played some early-war, Slovak vs. Polish (police?) scenario at WWF XI. He carefully manuvered through the woods for a few turns, and was all set up to make a massive attack on the victory village. In one defensive fire phase I tossed about 30 "3's", and nothing higher then a 5, oblitering everything in sight. I think the horse drawn, wagon-mounted mahine guns even hit stuff. Chas conceaded gracefully after that.
The amazing thing was that he actually continued to talk to me the next day. What a guy!!

Well, if we're calling Chas "up and coming" (as far as I'm concerned he's already here), then I have to throw out Jason Eickmann's name. Jason has a great game, and went from just pushing pieces to knocking off some big names over the course of three ASLOKs. I think work has kept him away from Cleveland for a couple years - hope to see him again next week.
