    Opart or OPART 300

So, I've started doing the map for my WWI scenarios. I'm going to do them all at the same scale (20km/hex) so I'm creating one large map that stretches from Switzerland in the west, to the Black Sea in the east. Riga in the north, to Salonika in the south. That way I can just chop off the parts that aren't needed for any given scenario.

I'm coming up with 95 hexes N-S and 106 hexes E-W. 106 is too large for OPART.exe. What I want to know is, how many people have problems playing in OPART300? The last time I designed a scenario, 3 or more years ago, OPART300 taxed a lot of people's machines too much and they couldn't play them without 1-hour waits for supply calculations and such. I know to a certain extent the size of the scenario still matters in OPART300, but even regular OPART scenarios opened in OPART300 seemed back then to run significantly slower (reserved memory issue perhaps?).

So, how many people here find OPART300 too much for their computers?

Well I have no problem running OpArt300 scenarios. If they open slower it is minor enough to be unnoticed. I suspect that most of today's faster machines will handle it without any problem but anyone still using older machines will still have the same problem. The newer machines with the extra RAM and processor speed should be able to move fairly quickly...I think.

I think I'm going to do it in regular OPART. I only need the far, far east for one scenario (Rumania 1916) and, obviously, I don't need Italy on the map for that. I can slice some hexes off the western edge and add them to the eastern edge for that one scenario.

I'm thinking that if any type of computer gamer would have computers that were behind the times, it would be wargamers.

Well mine would probably be behind the times somewhat also but if you take a catchasing dog, one scared cat, and a burning candle, the insurance company will buy you a brand new one. Not a recommended method of upgrading but it will work. Of course you have to upgrade a whole lot of other stuff then too!

I'm not aware of anyone who has problems running OPART300 any more.
Tactics are based on Weapons... Strategy on Movement... and Movement on Supply.

I think that you will find that by default OPART 300 has become the standard. You can write the scenario in either OPART or OPART 300, your choice, but it will be played by most (especially the PBM gamers) using 300.

Having only really played EA, Chuck had to tell me in the last tourney that the reason I wasn't able to open his turn was I was using 300...

There's no reason why you can't have the overall map designed in OPART300 and when you cut out sections for the individual scenarios, convert them to regular OPART. Its one of the function keys that does it. I forget exactly which one at the moment.

I forget the button too but it's listed in a post on the forum. Check out the early scenario design post from last year.
