Correct. William of Orange was invited to be King.

    Cheers!

The only thing that his saved the Brits over the years was 22 miles of water and bad planning by two guys called Naploeon and Hitler plus the lousy weather helped a lot.. If it hadnt been for bad weather and bad planning there is a good change the Brits would have all been talking Spanish by now.
.Read your history I used to be a Brit but saw the light many years ago and bought a ticket out.

Yes, I have read my history, thanks. And if the fact that we are an island and have lousy weather is going to help defend us from foreign lunatics bent on enslaving us to their own ends, then I'll take it.

You seem to think that these factors and "bad planning" on the part of our enemies is the only thing that's saved this country. I'm not sure why you have such a low opinion of the UK. If all we had to rely upon was "luck" to survive, we'd have been swallowed up years ago. I suppose Waterloo, Trafalgar, Dunkirk, El Alamein and countless other acts of bravery I could mention count for nothing?

If that is really your opinion, then that's fine, but you won't deflect my patriotism and I hope you are happy where you are living now.

Yes, there was Caesar, but that was 55 BC give or take a few. Actually, a friend of mine says that a History and Archeology Professor of his acquaintance is currently advocating a fairly plausible theory that the Roman invasion of Britain was less militaristic than people believe. The theory goes that strong trading links were already set up between the Roman Empire and Britain, the local tribes were already friendly with the Romans and very slowly, but surely, the Romans moved in. You know the sort of thing; a local tribal leader asks one of his Roman friends for a hand against his local enemy so the Roman friend duly obliges by bringing a few of his troops over and then, when it is all done and dusted, doesn't bother moving out again. The trend continues and, eventually, there are Romans all over the shop.

    Only a theory of course.

Being an island certainly offers some inherant defensive advantages, but to assume that that is the only reason the UK hasn't been invaded since 1066 (I discount 1485 & 1688) is extremely short sighted.

The British have one of history's most disciplined armies, the RAF has always been a technology leader and until 1945 they had the world best navy (now #2). This doesn't even begin to mention the wartime leadership (ie, Churchill) that instilled a "never give in attitude" to the general populous.

Hopefully the next time Europe decides to fight amoungst themselves (its only a matter of time before France or Germany piss off somebody), that the Brits just sit back and watch Europe implode.

Yeah, but it could have been worse, they could all have been named "Brittany" - Oh, the shame, the humiliation, the agony.
