    Re: Scernarios for VASL

Thanks all. I know it is not much work to do a single scenario but I was hopping to use VASAL to record my setups for all the scenarios (absurd you say? there are over 4k scenarios, how could you have a setup for every one?). Of course it is a work in progress
I would guess that with upgrades to the VASAL engine my created versions would eventually fall from compatibility. Is that a true statement?
    Thanks again for the responses.

By all means, use VASL to make and store your set ups.....which is a totally different issue from using canned scenario files created by someone else.

Make your setup, save the file, and viola'.....setup saved and available.

You are correct, from time to time, new versions of VASL make games saved under previous versions obsolete.

As a software developer, it surprises me that new versions would blitz old setups and if this is the case why they don't offer a utility to upgrade to the latest format. Not a big deal but it would be nice to hack around with some scenarios solitaire where you just don't have the time to insure that you can complete a game against a live opponent. Also, since I am often on the road and ASL-less except for my eASLRB, it is really not possible to get much gaming in a 60-120 minute window. I know VASL is a voluntary project and we have had this discussion before. Note that I do "get" the fun of assembling a scenario...just don't have the time and/or the resources to do it as often as I might like.

Having spent about 10 years traveling for work extensively to Asia, I feel your pain. There were extended periods where my only ASL was on VASL....and a lot of that was before the live server was around so it was some PBEM but mainly setting up scenarios just for the hell of it. The time differences were just such and my sleep patterns were f*cked up just enough that I couldn't really swing live play even once the server came online.

A lot of that travel was supporting electronic production for a product that had substantial firmware content from a large development organization in the States. Considering the fact that there is such an amorphous group of volunteer developers that are working under the loosest (if any) development management, it's a minor miracle that log files created under any earlier version of VASL/VASSAL would work with any once and future versions.

It does, and that is the only thing that keeps me believing in miracles...and buying the odd lotto ticket or two.
