    Player A - 1 time
    Player B - 2 times
    Player A - 3 times
    Player B - 4 times
    Etc...

This would make its first use somewhat critical. Do you use it and give up the ability to "save" a 12? Once the other guy gets the chit, you may never see it again...

I think this favors the attacker too much as the defender is most likely going to need it first, especially if he only has one anti-AFV weapon. The attacker could then hold onto it for the rest of the game and use it once at the end, if needed, and still not pass it back. Plus, in many scenarios the attacker is usually able to withstand a 12 (or two) when the defender cannot.

Maybe a better solution would be an SSR specifying how many Initiative Chits (re-rolls on a 12) each side gets at the start of the game. For example, D = 1 / A =0, or D = 2 / A =1.

How about an Initiative Chit being used in balance? If a scenario slightly favors one side or the other, then the un-balanced side is given an I Chit. This could also be used in ABS.... Level 1 - Germans get one extra 467 and one I Chit.

Depends on the scenario. For example, take "About His Shadowy Sides". I think the Russian is more likely to use it first for his KVs - either for a start up roll or MA shot...

The main reason I wouldn't be interested in the addition of initiative to Squad Leader is that there are already mechanisms in place to mitigate the effects of unlikey dice rolls--the Critical Hit that duds out, the HOB roll that causes Surrender. Also, I don't want to lose the game-changing opportunity a lucky dice roll can produce. The games I remember are those in which crazy things, sometimes good, sometimes bad, happen.
