    ASL Opponent Locator

    Hi Everyone,

In the opoonents wanted section a new UK ASLer has just asked for opponents, and I pointed him in the direction of the opponent locator on the VFTT website, so I thought I might as well mention it here as well.
If you go to http://www.vftt.co.uk/aslers_locator_v3.asp, you can enter a UK post code, a US zip code, or a Canadian post code and get a list of players within a specified radius. It works pretty well, though don't expect many matches for US and Canadian players, as there aren't many in the VFTT database.

If anyone finds any problems with it let me know and I'll see what I can do to correct them.

    Cool Re: ASL Opponent Locator

    Pete,

I would love to add that feature to the web site of the Canadian ASL Association. How does one do it?
Playing ASL in Montreal since 1990.

Easy way? Stick a link on the CASLA website to the page :-)

Hard way? Email me for the code and database with Canadian post codes :-)

Would love to take credit for it, but the original code came from someone on one of the Google maps forums, tho I had to modify it when Google changed the map API from v2 to v3.

A couple other ways: (with permission) load the page in an <IFRAME> tag on your site. By playing around with offsets, it could look like part of your site. Another way (also with permission) would be to cut the form and scripts out the source page and embed them in your own site. Can't say for sure, but it looks like the relevant code is mostly in the goggle which can be put anywhere.

Actually most of the code is in ASP so it's not visible in the page source :-)
The original source code can be found here:
    http://www.clearviewdesign.com/clear...bie/demos.html

Getting hold of the post codes and their latitude/longitudes is the fun part :-( There are plenty of sites offering to sell you the data, but none of them are cheap! I found a couple of free sites for the US and Canada, and the Ordnance Survey have released a set of data for the UK tho it uses Eastings and Northings, and you do not want to see the code that converts these to Lat/long values!!

I'd love to expand the locator to work for France, Germany, Australia, in fact the rest of the world, but haven't been able to find free sources of the data :-(
