Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the UK

I heard a news report today that FGM is tolerated in the UK. That something on the average of about 6000 women a year are legaly put under the knife for this barbaric practice and with the government being fully complicit. That the UK government allows it so as not to offend any muslims. I also understand from the same report that UK social services are not allowed to report spousal abuse if it involves muslims for the same reason.

Is that true! Can any of our UK members comment on this?

Never heard of this. What is your source? I know it's not accepted routine surgery but that does not mean it does not happen.

It is illegal in the uk but estimated that 24,000 are at risk of it.

It was drive time afternoon and I caught the last half of an interview with a fellow from the UK that was talking about FGM. I don't remember the names but what he said seemed pretty shocking.

Sounds like the government is paying mostly lip-service. Sure it may be illegal but 100K women already cut-up and not one single conviction...ever!?!?

And this comment from an anti-FGM activist..."If a white girl is abused, the police come break down the door. If a black girl is mutilated, nobody takes care of her. This is what I call racism."

I am just shocked that this could go on in a nation like the UK.

Like all "cultural" practices, policing this requires the consent and cooperation of the society. It's not something I've heard about happening but the. Loving in a 99% White Scottish area I'm unlikely to have. I'll try and find out more for you.
