This is non-ASL but will be worth a read. Especially if you are a sports fan. This is my 30th year of officiating and I had a classic happening today. The third of my career.
Was doing a high school lacrosse game at Friends Academy (where Boomer Esiasons kids go to school). As I was shaking the "ROAD TEAMS" coaches hand out of the woods comes someone dressed in a FULL Easter Bunny costume. I said to the coach.."what the hell is that, the Easter Bunny is here"....coach replies..."yeah, it is my damn mother and I wish she would stop doing that to me every year". It was classic as the Easter Bunny gave out candy to all the road team players.
Classic number two was many years ago (1991) in my second year as a minor league umpire. We were about fifty games into the season and I was the base umpire. I probably kicked a call at first on the back end of a double play ball. Had to eject the skipper as he spat on me and all I could do was listen to him yell at me as I was not sure if I kicked the call or not. Then some drunken red neck from the stands yells out..."hey ump, if you had one more eye you'd be a cyclopse." After the dust cleared and skip left the field and we started to play again, the first baseman, who I had many a good conversation with during the game and around the bag at first, says to me as he is holding the runner on that I kicked the call on..."nice call blinky".
At that point, I knew I missed it.
Classic number three was at Colgate University during a college football game. It was homecoming and there was lots of security around. Colgate was losing and the coach was not happy. I was working his sideline as the line judge. Somehow a streaker got on the field and was running around and entertaining the fans. The Colgate coach was embarrassed and fuming as the streaker constantly eluded the security guards chasing him. I went over to the white hat and said..."Bobby, lets flag him for delay of game". His response..."Trezza, do not give me any dumb ideas and get back on your sideline and enjoy the show".
