The Germans should have learned from the Soviets who did improve the T34/76 turrets to a 'coffin' shape. This reduces the frontal face of the turret and allows the sides of the turret to deflect shot at oblique angles. It's my opinion that the Germans just did not improve the Panzer IV while the Soviets improved the T34 and the USA improved the Sherman right up till the end of the war. I suppose they had mountains of turrets already welded up by sub-contractors and couldn't interrupt the flow anyway.

My experience has been that authors and publishers are only too happy for excerpts from their books to be posted because of the free publicity it gives them.
But i can see some of you are nervous about the whole copyright thing so I won't post anything else, merry christmas and hasta la vista..

There are large classes of photos where publishing is allowed, even re-publishing after they went through a book. The classic WW2 example if the German federal archive ("Bundesarchiv"). All the pictures in there are licensed to be re-used. The US government also has strict policies that by default it's intellectual property is public domain.

Book publishers are generally useless when it comes to statements about this. If their author used a Bundearchiv picture then yes you are allowed to scan it back and post it. But they will tell you no, they have copyright. They don't but the clerks answering inquiries will not actually look at individual photo rights. As far as they have learned in book publishing college everything in their books is their copyright. They will usually not know how copyright and licensing actually works.

What I would avoid is taking photos that originated from private collections. The classic example is a webmaster who posts photos that his grandfather took in the war and stored them on the attic. Re-publishing these elsewhere is both against the law (clearly a privately held copyright here) and against good Internet citizen rules.

I wouldn't get too worked up. Strictly speaking you can't publish your granddad's war photos on the web without securing a model release from everybody in the pictures either, including your enemies. Not sure how that works for people who were dead at the time of the picture but I'm sure it'll be interesting if you were to research it

Alright then i'll carry on posting pics in the WW2 photos thread, i've been posting them in other websites for years so GS might as well have some too..
