    Hurtgen Forest

    Guys,

Wanted to provide a short update as we have been energized to try and get this project ready sometime in 2012.

First things have been a makeover of the maps. I think previously I was too focused on the historical aspect, and we are making some adjustments to make it more player friendly.
A long time ago discussed the maps on Gamesquad. General input was 1" hexes for the Schmidt/Kommerscheidt map and .75" hexes for the Vossenack map because of the lenght.

Numerous CGs also in the works with very positive results, and another group is about ready to start playing through every scenario to ensure these are good to go. Almost all were final years ago, but want to ensure we didnt miss anything, map changes have no effect, etc.

Sounds good as ever. Do you have any pictures of the maps? Can you give us a clue as to the size of this module? How long are the CG's?

    Thanks for any feedback.

Right now expect anywhere from 16-18 scenarios for the pack with a little more than half the scenarios taking place on the Schmidt map and the remainder on the Vossenack map. There is going to be one CG covering the action around Schmidt which will cover 7 CG scenario dates (morning and afternoon from Nov 4-7). The CG starts the afternoon of the 4th with German assault on Kommerscheidt after their morning capture of Schmidt proper. That assault took place over the next 3 days in very bitter house to house fighting as the Germans attempted to evict the Americans from Komm. This CG is not too large and should provide a good avenue for folks to play a CG in a reasonable amount of time. In lieu of a CG on the Voss. map, we are looking at doing a large scenario that covers the entire action on the board.

For both the Schmidt and Vossenack maps, the first reaction from most playtesters on seeing the maps for the first time is "where are all the forests?". Yes, this is the middle of the Hurtgen Forest, but these towns tended to be build on top of ridgelines and high ground that was fairly devoid of trees. I've got snapshots of them below.

    Re: Hurtgen Forest

Yep, this is a fight for key villages on top of mountains and the key road networks.

Also, this is not an "elilte" unit fight. Many 2nd line MMCs on both sides, Fortress Bn/Russ unit fillers with a variety of weapons. Main vehicles are M4A3 and PzIVH. The Germans have Stugs and JgPzV early on, but then these stayed on the mountain as artillery. They were finally able to get Panthers into the fight on the last day, when they massed a bunch of AFVs and made an all out push to take Kommerscheidt. Amis also have M10s of course.

Of course all 15 or so scenarios have Amis vs. Germans fighting for the three villages. Players will be able to gather the full appreciation of a US Inf Bn and their firepower (ie, all the MGs and mortars). The CG ends up having some very interesting looooooong range mortar duels.

    Re: Hurtgen Forest

This is what I imagine my American troops saying during our PT of the CG so far:

    I hope you like rain.
-"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room". - President Merkin Muffley
-"Crowe, Chamberlin, and Ruud continued to lob mortar shells at the complex, hoping for another lucky hit". Utmost Savagery
