Just making sure that I understand this correctly. Onboard Mortars (Guns and SW style) are Direct Fire weapons that use Indirect Fire principles for resolution of their fire. So, a non-moving Unconcealed squad in a Level 4 Open Ground hill hex receives fire from a SW Mortar at Level 0...it does not receive the Height Advantage (+1) drm to the IFT resolution of a Hit by a Mortar in this circumstance.

Yep - It's been a good while in waiting.

Not only has Rising Sun hit it's pre-order mark, but it's cleared 1,000 sets and still climbing; and then they can figure out how many more they want to purchase to keep it in stock for a bit too. Yet still, no word on when they expect it to print; let alone SHIP?!

So let's have some fun - and not just talk about printing; but when will it ship?!

Have fun and vote in the poll or/and add your 3 cents.

Hi

It is a dark and cold night in Festung Budapest CG. Russian offensive starts anew. Itis Turn 1 russian Mph. No russian counters taht are not cloak is in NVR of the enemy.

As I understand it the following cases for initial SS is in effect:
Starshell Initial Use only (during PFPh, MPh, DFPh) if:
A) LOS to enemy unit;
B) Moving enemy vehicle within 16 hexes if no friendly vehicles on board;
C) Friendly Gunflash; 4) Enemy FFE.
In a night scen in Festung Budapest a enemy Dummy cloak moves into NVR of enemy units. This is the very first move of the scen.

Q1: If a Russian cloak (containing nothing i.e. a dummy cloak) moves into NVR of enemy units - is this enough for case A?
Q2: If a Russian AFV (the German does have AFV as well on bd but let us assume he don't)) moves fully out of LOS but within 16 hexes. Is this enough for case B?

/S

Hoping you can help.

1) Is there a mod manager for the Squad Battles series. (I have AotR.)

2) Any recommendations for mods for the counters in AotR (that would look something like ASL symbols, e.g. 3 men on a counter for a squad, but it does not have to be an exact ASL replica - I just want something other than the facial portrait on counters).
3) Any recommendations for terrain mods?

Today is the 200th Anniversary of the Second Day of the Battle of Bautzen. Bautzen was the largest land battle in European history at that time....

Today is the 200th Anniversary of the Second Day of the Battle of Bautzen. Bautzen was the largest land battle in European history at that time. Leipzig would go on to eclipse it and it would not be until World War One that a battle would take their place.

This battle is little written about. Why? Well it doesn't sound like Waterloo!

A large army (the French) with mainly infantry faced the Allies who had plenty of cavalry but could not coordinate it properly. The fighting was savage on several sectors of the battlefield. Rather than the narrow frontage of the Lutzen battlefield, Bautzen spanned several miles and included a memorable flank attack by Ney (which could have crushed the Allies had he not turned inward too soon).

This battle did not bring the laurels of campaign victory that Napoleon so desired and the proximity to Austria reminded him that his line of supply could be cut if they chose to enter the campaign arena.

Simply put - Napoleon's cavalry lay dead on the steppes of Russia. Had he not invaded in 1812 Europe today may be a much different place.

Lets remember the brave men that fought on this day. This battle deserves a better place in history than what the Book Publishers have allowed. Put Waterloo in the title and they buy it. It is a shame that the book publisher controls so much of what we see today. I know of several authors that have great books ready to go but publishers are not putting out their works.

When you get a chance - put in a good word for books on the 1813 campaign. Compared to Waterloo, 1813 is terribly neglected.

Hello to all my ASL Comrades. To celebrate Memorial Day and all this
Holiday means I'm putting all our pdf. and Paper Issue Bundles on sale
and here is how it works.

All Dispatches Issues have been converted to pdf. file format with a Huge
effort by my Printing MVP Ralph McDonald. I do have a limited number
of Paper Issues available as well, more on those a little farther down.

The usual cost for a Digital The WORKs Order (All 36 Issues plus a 4 Issue
Subscription starting with current Issue #36) is $60.00. Now through
Memorial Day they will be $50.00. That is 39 Issues in total and over
100 Scenarios! That is less than $.50 cents a scenario, which is a pretty
good deal, whether it is 2013 or 1993.

I do still have a limited number of Paper Issues #34, 35 & 36, a 4 Issue
Subscription including those 2 Back Issues is normally +$20.00, through
Memorial Day it is $16.00

As for the individual pdf. issues, if the Issue you are looking to purchase
has all original content still in it is $3.00, any issue that saw something
re-published by MMP will have that page removed, and an informational page
in its place telling you what MMP publication to find it in, those issues are
just $2.00 Each (#01, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08. 10, 13, 16, 17, 18 & 19).
If wanting just pdf. issues for a subscription, it is only $15.00.

Please e-mail me before ordering individual pdf. issues on what I can do for you price
wise if ordering 5 or more issues.

We have started work on Issue #37 and I'll have a summary of the 4 scenarios going
into it with my next update in June.

We have the usual 4 scenarios for #36 and here they are:

Assyrian Ambush: The 2nd in the Battle for Iraq series by Ted Wilcox sees elements
of the Iraqi Independent Mechanized Brigade running the gauntlet through Bd 57
as British trained and equipped Iraqi levies try to stop them from exiting. All armor
vs all infantry in 1941 for a quick playing tourney action.

The Police Station: Joe Gochinski has another in the Hong Kong battles with action
starting immediately with on board melees at start as the Japanese 38th Division tries
to capture the Police Station, with it's overwatch position from the Winnipeg Grenadiers.
Reinforced company side elements on both sides and a strong Canadian defensive position
with fortifications makes for a taught battle until the end. 6.5 turns makes it just small
enough to fit into a tourney time slot or 5 to 6 hour time frame. Exciting action for sure.

Hunting Gray Wolves: The latest in the NKVD series from our own Tom Morin sees a sweep
by a company of NKVD 6-2-8s supported by mixed armor and air support trying to dig out
Graywolve Partisans in the Ukraine. Board 34 is where the action is and comes down to
much close range fighting and CC. Lots of FUN for both sides as CVPs and Hut Control
are the VCs.

Defending the Twin Villages: The Battle of the Bulge setting of the approaches to
Rocherath-Krinkelt on boards 5 & 32 sees Kampfgruppe Muller of the 12th SS Hitler
Jugend crashing into the valiant GIs of the 2nd Infantry Division. 18 (6-5-8) SS squads
supported by 5 x JgdPz IV/70 Tank Destroyers attack a company of mixed American
squads with a bunch of SWs, a 81* Mtr a 2 x M4A3/76W Sherman 76L tanks. A fairly
large action taking 8.5 turns with the SS trying to break through. Much maneuver and
lots of firepower here.

Hello folks,

in tonight's game a situation arose on which the outcome of the scenario depends:

A certain number of building hexes has to be controlled by one side. Now a US squad from S6 Assault Moves to R5 which contains a single hex building which only has a ground level. It is attacked by the German HS in S4 by Snap Shot (A8.15) which manages to break it. According to the rule, if affected by the Snap Shot the moving unit is considered to be in the Location entered thereafter.

ASLpic.jpg

But what happens regarding control of the building in R5?

a) The unit is broken before it actually enters the R5 building and thus cannot gain control of it.
b) The unit is considered to have reached the building in Good Order and thus gains control of it but is broken thereafter.

My best guess is a) which would suit me well as it would give me the win. :D But I cannot come up with any rules reference for either interpretation.

Thanks for your help,

Greetings,

I am trying to get some tastes about the electronic warfare.

So, you keep your radars silent, and only turn them on when you search for enemy vessels.
And you turn on your radars to shoot, b/o you need your radars to lock your missiles on enemy targets?

Am I right?

You use the ESM to jam enemy radars when they try to locate you?

And comm link? Keep it on? Off?

So, it seems some of you, try to keep the whole electronic stuff as silent as possible, in order not to give <<free intel>>.

Pretty complicated for a newbie.

This was the second scenario in my recent homecoming back to ASL, and it didn't go nearly as well as the first. We played the original, unrevised version, so in other words a completely unbalanced dog of a scenario, but we played it anyway knowing the Americans were doomed. After weighing my options on the defense and skimming some AARs, I decided to almost completely forfeit the open ground and focus my defense in and around the village itself. I came to the conclusion, rightly I believe, that trying to contest the open ground would have only ended in a lot of broken/dead squads and TDs in the opening prep fire. I set up my mortars on the left and right sides of the board, out of normal range of the SS, but where they could fire on them as they advanced. I hid two AT guns in the forest on the left, one facing the left-hand attack corridor, one facing the center, then set up the third AT gun waaaaay over in the woods hex by the orchard on the right, which ended up being a great location for it to watch the right flank. The first two AT guns, however, were not in good positions. (More on that later) I set up the roadblock on the left road entry into the village (a meh place to put it), and HIPped the 9-1 with two squads, the HMG, and a BAZ in the building immediately north of it. I set up the rest of my 747s in a reverse slope defense around the village, with a few fields of fire out to the open ground at points where the SS couldn't prep on me, but I could engage them as they advanced on the village. Both MMGs were on the right side of the map in/around the graveyard with okay fields of fire out to the right and north. I did set up one squad with a BAZ on the south side of the lefthand forest with the AT guns, with the intent of making him think twice before swinging anything around those woods hexes to cut rout paths (an okay place to put it). I set one TD on the south side of graveyard to watch the right (hull facing down the graveyard road, turret facing right), then set the other one behind the aforementioned lefthand forest beside the BAZ squad. Altogether an okay defense.

I assumed the Germans would push heavy on the left and right, and maybe send some squads up the center through the building with the stone walls all around it. In reality, Dash pushed heavy left and center, with almost nothing on the right. All three Panthers were set in the left corridor with armored assaulting squads, all the HTs were on the central road loaded with squads to push on the center with a bunch of dismounted squads to push up on foot, a couple squads on the right to probe the righthand forest, and all six Mark IV's were spread evenly across his entire front to fire smoke to cover the advance. On the opening prep, five of the MkIV's successfully fired smoke, one directly on top of one of my HIPped AT guns in the forest, and the rest effectively covering his movement of the rest of his force. Long story short, he cautiously moved up through the cover of smoke, my mortars were all but useless in hitting anything, the first shot from the non-smoked AT gun in the left woods at a HT broke the gun. In fact, I didn't have a single weapon get rate until the second American turn. By turn two, he had blown through my meager leftmost defenses without suffering a single casualty. The mortar team was unceremoniously killed before they had ever connected on a shot, both AT guns were overrun by infantry by the end of turn 3 (with no kills), and it was obvious the Panthers were going to come around and murder by TD, so it pulled back toward the village. The first German casualty was a Panther that came around the left forest and absentmindedly exposed its side to the bazooka team in the woods at 2 hexes. The crew survived, the SS steamroller rolled on. As the rest of the left SS joined the party, the M10 TD, trapped by the rapidly advancing Panthers, fired APCR and managed to immobilize a Panther and force the crew to bail. The remaining Panther turned him into a burning wreck. The lone remaining AT gun on the right managed to kill two MarkIVs after repeatedly missing and bouncing hits off the hulls, and the right mortar eventually went on a rate tear and held back the two squads coming up that way. (Pretty much the only infantry casualties I inflicted). I rolled the TD from the graveyard up behind the hill to watch the central entry to the village, but then Dash popped a Mark IV on the hill adjacent. Killed it, but not before all the halftracks rolled into the village and started bypass freezing my squads (having disembarked their passengers beside the central two-hex building outside the village). About the time the left SS horde came prancing into the village with a nary a single infantry casualty (does a wounded 9-2 from a sniper count?), I cried uncle and surrendered on American turn 4.

The end result was: one GO Panther (one dead, the other immobilized and abandoned by the crew), one GO MkIV (four dead, one MA disabled recalled), two GO halftracks (one destroyed by streetfighting, one blasted by a bazooka), 14 or so GO squads (he lost/reduced a couple on the right from the mortar), all the leaders (the 9-2 was wounded but survived), and about 3 surviving tank crews running around being a pain in the arse. I only had about 8 squads left and all three leaders, but had lost two bazookas to squads being eliminated and the HMG to a pin result in the middle of the street when they had smoked, then tried to dash across to road to escape the oncoming combined arms juggernaut. I still had both MMGs, two BAZ, all my leadership, one AT gun, and a mortar, but had folded like a chair under the SS advance. I had mauled his AFVs due to mismanagement by the German player and a healthy dose of luck, but in the end it didn't matter at all. By turn 4, his left and center/hammer and anvil infantry attack had essentially locked all my infantry from moving and adjusting, turning my mobile defense into a stationary one. And despite having the advantageous position, my measly Airborne were staring down tall stacks of SS with leaders and MGs. I had some pretty rotten luck with ROF, but at best I might have only delayed a few squads from moving on the village by a single turn. If you removed half the German armor from this and gave the Americans more infantry, I still doubt they would have much of a chance. The SS just have too much firepower and too high morale, and the Americans are hard pressed to even slow them down. Dash controlled half the village with only a fraction of his forces having entered the village, and it would have turned into a wholesale massacre by turn 6 the way things were going. The only way the Americans can win this one is through amazingly skilled play, a truckload of luck, and an incompetent German player. However, it was great fun and the mauling his armor took was a moral victory for me. It definitely knocked a few inches of rust off my infantry and combined arms skills, so next we're looking to play something a little bigger still. Suggestions?
