Went through a round of patching today to catch up (thanks HPS for the continued support ! ) and had a couple of oddities:

-Korean War 1.05 documentation has no started.pdf file available (probably forgotten while making the patch archive I guess)

-The campaign frontend for eagle strike 1.04 or 1.04a (the cp_start.exe file) doesn't work (for me), I had to take the cp_start.exe from... AOTR 1.04 update (odd because AOTR doesn't have any campaign but hey the file is there and it works with ES).

I post this here instead of sending an email to HPS support so fellow sqb'ers can fix the eagle strike frontend themselves if they wish to do so :D.

I should probably post this at their forums, but what the heck.

Assuming you want to add a second license for more characters, but you also want to be free to actually play it at the same time:

can you go the normal route of adding a second license key to your account. I think not because you log in with your account, which now holds 14 characters and you probably can't be logged in twice. I assume, or are they smart enough to allow two logins if you have two keys on there?

And what is the cheapest way to get a base license and the Mirkwood upgrade? Microcenter has Moria for $10, but how much would I have to pay for the upgrade to Mirkwood? A straight online/download license with Mirkwood is $30.

During the German adv fire phase a sniper attacked is generated for the german and the resulting 1 DR will break 1 of my squads. The one remaining good order squad in the same location can now make a sniper check DR. However if he does this he is marked with a TI counter. My question is when is the TI counter removed. Is it at the end of the current turn's cc phase (german turn) or is it at the end of the next Russian cc phase?

This may be simple, but my search-fu failed me.

I was playing PHD3 last night and bogged a Sherman trying to bust through bocage. B9.54 states that it is bogged "in the hex being exited." So the question I have is this: For an "exiting" bog check, when the bog is removed, does the vehicle have to take another bog check to attempt to exit again (and pay the add'l MPs again) or has it now "cleared" the obstacle? I can't seem to find a rule or example that makes this clear.

I think that the "in hex" reference from B9.54 and the fact that per D8.3 you "move normally" once bog is removed indicates that if you fail to get across the bocage (for instance) and bog, once you've removed the bog, you can take another crack at crossing the bocage and you're not automatically clear of it, but I'm not sure.

Thanks.

I am playing domination 2 over at FGM and they are using a third reich map board and CM games to decide whether hexes or won, lost, etc. It's actually quite fun, and had me energized for playing CMAK and CMBB again.

The problem is, we have to wait for someone to update the map every week to see the new moves. I was wondering what your thoughts might be on creating an automated map where I would see an automated map working like:

Sign up as either axis or allies.

1) log into program or website (it then knows if you can choose green or blue hexes)
2) double click on hex of your color you wish to attack from
3) menu pops up that indicates what hex you wish to attack (if you are green, it will only show blue hexes)
4) double click on hex you want to attack from menu
5) arrow appears with your name from attacking hex
6) whoever wants to accept the attack double clicks hex with attacking arrow to it.
7) accepts and name appears at other end of arrow
8) battle concludes and attacker double clicks attack hex again
9) menu comes up that allows you to choose through attack conclusion options
10) submit and hexes now current.

The only problem I foresee are invasion hexes and airdrop hexes, so the attack hex should have option 1 in menu: attack (everything 1 hex away appears), airdrop (everything around 3 hexes away appears) and sea invasion, all beach head hexes appear. I don't think we would have to get into having the program recognize what sea hexes can be attacked, the rules could do that, but I would think that if we could build in 2 axis airdrops at a time, 3 allied airdrops at a time, and however many sea invasions a side can have going at a time, that would be good, but not necessary.

I am looking to see if this is possible and how much it would cost to do. I think it could be the basis for a real regenesis of CM wargaming, and could easily be applicable to the new CM Normandy for west front battles (if it is any good).

I'd appreciate your wisdom, and the wisdom of any other programmers designers.

BTW, you can see the design at FGM: http://www.thefewgoodmen.com/thefgmf...splay.php?f=19

Section of map

You can see where I have had to use paint and draw in cheesy graphics to represent official game markers to keep it updated between major updates.

Cheers!

I'm just reading Battle of The Box by Patrick Turnbull at the mo and came across a tactic used by the Brits there that was effective against the attacking Japanese in the Admin Box in Burma. If a troop of Grants were in support on the counter attack, they'd fire HE until the infantry managed to close with the enemy, then switch to AP, fooling the Japanese into thinking they were still being fired upon heavily so they'd keep their heads down, while the attacking British infantry knew that accurate AP was coming in instead and that it was "safe" to close with the enemy. The change was signalled by verey light.

My question is, can anyone think of a way to give these effects in ASL? It'd be a chromey SSR if only I could think of a way :hmmm:

Anyone who has followed Impulse since its initial launch last year can likely attest to the gains it has made. Based on discussions with publishers along with the numbers we are aware of, it is our belief that Impulse has become the second most popular digital distribution platform worldwide in terms of dollars generated per month.

It is our rough estimation that for the calendar year 2009, digital distribution will represent approximately 25% of the revenue for a typical PC game publisher on a new title (though this varies significantly based on demographics).

Our estimation is that Steam - as the current market leader - enjoys approximately 70% of the overall digital distribution market with Impulse at 10% and all others combined at 20% in terms of actual dollars generated per month. Steam and Impulse both have the advantage of exclusive content (Left 4 Dead, Half-Life, Sins of a Solar Empire, Demigod, etc.).

One of the most significant trends of the past year we have seen has been the rise of “Weekend Sales.” One major advantage digital distributors have over retailers is the ease in which prices can be altered for limited times.

These weekend sales began in earnest mid last year with the Weekend “Impulse Buys” in which a series of games were priced dramatically lower than normal. The news of this sale was picked up by some of the major gaming sites which in turn helped encourage other digital distributors to begin offering their own weekend sales, resulting in more sites to cover these events. This attracted the attention of the major publishers who began to request their own games participate in these weekend sales because of the promotion they received in the press.

In effect, the gaming news sites including Blues News, ShackNews, Joystiq, Examiner, Crispy Gamer, Gamer’s Hell, Rock Paper Shotgun, Game Focus – and these are just some that I can think of off the top of my head – have resulted in an unprecedented reduction in price for PC gamers. Ironically, this fairly dramatic trend has gone largely unreported for the obvious reason: the gaming media is the source of the PC gamer’s good fortune, and thus it might seem self-congratulatory for the media to point out the significant change in the average cost of a PC game in the past year.

It has also highlighted the importance of competition in digital distribution. With each digital distributor competing for customers, the result has been a vast and rapid reduction in cost for gamers.

For Stardock, the more significant shock of Demigod has been the discovery of the low number of PC gamers who play strategy games online. Demigod’s single player experience, while decent, did not get anywhere near the care that the Internet multiplayer experience did. Despite this, only 23% of people who have purchased Demigod have ever even attempted to logon to play Internet multiplayer.

Demigod continues to sell thousands of copies weekly – enough to remain at retail during the Christmas season despite it coming out last Spring – but the number of people available to play online is typically less than 2,000 at a given time. This is in stark contrast to MMORPGs and FPS’s which tend to have very large online communities.

Our conclusion is that strategy games that we make and publish in the future will support multiplayer but will not sacrifice the single player experience to do so.

To that end, one might compare the state of PC gaming in 2008 to 2009 and decide whether they believe things have improved. We believe they have.

In Stardock’s case, we had the opportunity to put our money where our collective mouth was with the problematic network performance of Demigod when it was first released. Players who were unable to play the game online were allowed to return the game to Stardock for a full refund even if they purchased it at retail (which effectively meant we ate the difference between wholesale price and retail).

At the time of this writing, approximately 2,000 users did return Demigod to us. Approximately 60% of those users purchased at retail. Nearly 90% of all users who returned Demigod subsequently re-purchased the game once the network issue had been resolved.

Sins of a Solar Empire continues to be successful far beyond what we had ever imagined it would be. Developer Ironclad Games has continued to provide regular updates, and development on Sins of a Solar Empire: Diplomacy (Diplomacy), the second and final “micro expansion” for Sins of a Solar Empire is nearly complete.

We believe Diplomacy will be well received by players because it adds a great deal of depth and new gameplay options (such as faster pacing options). However, we are uncertain how it will be reviewed since many of its new features are more subtle than were in Entrenchment, which had very obvious new features such as Starbases.

I'm putting together some html documents that explain my modus operandi for rank beginners. These are the documents I wish I had when I was learning the game. I'm limiting the size of documents so that they are under 10M bytes in size so it won't be much of a burden to download them, and you do need to download them to watch them because I have bou cou images in a directory that the html documents need to load. After you download this package just unzip it and double-click on the file called D21 turn 4.html and your browser should open it automatically for you. This thing reads like a very very detailed AAR. I'm planning on having a series of these so stay tuned for subsequent issues of this project. You can find the first document at this url:

http://www.mediafire.com/?m4wm0mwiwld

Your questions and comments are more than welcome.

D21 turn 4 doc 2 is ready you guys. It's a continuation of the above mentioned document and the second in the series. I have no idea how many of these are going to be produced but if there is enough demand for more I'll keep doing them. You can find the second document in the series at this url:

http://www.mediafire.com/?2rzmgjwghyg

The third document in this series is ready for publication. I capture some of the hexes of Riga in this document. We're still in round one however so the main attacks haven't been executed yet. I have about 80% of my units left to move so there's more material coming still. You can find the third document at this url:

http://www.mediafire.com/?zx1dnql3yjm

The fourth document in this series is finished already. I've changed up my style in this one. This one is more entertaining with some humor ( how do you spell humor? ). Anyway, I try to be funnier and I think I may have succeeded in a spot or two. You can find the fourth document at this url:

I see that the current GSASL Cyrenaica 1941 Campaign Game is in a hold status. Is there enough interest in this type of game format to warrant another (preferably "much" smaller) campaign? I noticed there seems to be great interest when they start but then participation seems to drop dramatically as the game progresses.

If another project was small, say 3-4 missions, would anyone be interested in joining in? I am working on a regular SASL style campaign and thought it might fit well in a GSASL format too. For the GSASL part I am only in the beginning stages of putting something like this together so its not something that would start real soon. I just thought I would put the idea out there and see what kind of reception is gets before proceeding further.

The 'rolling' effect of Hills which ASL finds so difficult to replicate, and hence the introduction of 'slopes' which many find awkward, was first emulated by the Alpine Hill optional rule.

Has anyone EVER used this? I don't remember any SSR in any scenario which invokes this rule. It is an optional rule invoked by SSR only (or mutual consent I guess).

The rule is simply that if you are on a hill level you cannot see 'through' same level hill hexes. So basically you can only see adjacent same level hill hexes and not beyond - because the hill rolls away from you.

It sounds like it might make for some interesting LOS on hill boards. Certainly much more restrictive, which is what hills were. Imagine this rule in KGP for example! Plus all the slopes, lol. It would be a riot, lol. :D

However, can a leader be used in a FG simply for the purpose of preventing the units being directed by that leader from cowering? For example, if a four-location FG rolls a cowering result and there is a leader in only one of the four locations, could that leader have declared he was directing the fire of the units in his location and prevented those units from cowering (i.e., they maintain ROF). In other words, would the units being directly by that leader be exempt from the random selection DR to determine which units in the FG actually cowered?

We completed our playing of Breakout from Borisov last night. It was a resounding German win, we stopped play after the end of German T6 Mph.
So...

We completed our playing of Breakout from Borisov last night. It was a resounding German win, we stopped play after the end of German T6 Mph.
So many weapons for the Germans. The Russians really got a bloody nose. The real issue here is that the Russians feel like they must attack to win, and really thats true, but they just don't have the superior assets/force to achieve that through just plowing into the Germans.

The Germans move first, with 1/2 MF, MP .. so they can't get far. This means of course the Russians move last, which is important in terms of the VC which revolve around "board control" .. ie having twice as many CVP on a board then your opponent. There are 5 boards, the Russians have to control more boards than the Germans for the win.

Early moves find the German obviously fully in control of their entry board, board 1. The Russians moving quickly to Bd 3, dropping off some force in Bd 4/5 and 2 to "control" them as well.

However, things went downhill quickly for the Russians after that.

German OBA hitting building 3M2 keeping the Russian MG nest ducking for cover, and starting the building on fire! The Russians had tried to get into a village overwatch position in this building, but it never happened.

A German 9-2 hmg, mmgx2 stack was situated up in L2 on Board 1 controlling the Board 3/2 board edge, just tearing into every Russian squad that poked his head out. The Russian cavalry troops had galloped to positions in this area, armed with atrs hoping to prevent German halftracks from racing to Bd 2, but this 9-2 led kill stack wreaked havok on them, elr'ing nearly every squad it hit. The Russian attempt to bring the big KV-2 152* tank into the area to hit this nest, went poorly when the crew left itself CE, and the 9-2 stack hit it, causing a K result, recalling that vehicle. That was a huge swing in the game.

In the meantime, the German 37L TH and AC were sneaking along the other side of the map board edge, and made their way to Bd 4, challenging the Russian for control of that board.

The German PzIII's were outdueling the Russian BT tanks from Bd 3/Bd2 Hilltops.

The German led 10-3 engineers were taking the center of the Bd 3 village and holding it. Fending off all Russian attacks.
They had 3 mmg's to form another kill group, led by this 10-3.

All of these factors severely depleted the Russian force, and with a FT killing another Russian tank in the village, and 2 Stukas showing up, one destroying a Russian tank with a bomb, the Germans held a significant force advantage, especially in armor with the only "good" Russian tank left being the T34.

The Germans then began to move out from their Bd 1/3 positions to challenge Bd 4 and 2. And the Russians saw the writing on the wall, and conceded. The German with their mobile vehicles, could put enough VP on each board to make doubling up on the VP very difficult for the Russian on every board, and the Germans fully controlled Bd 1.

The board control is an interesting VC. Not seen in many scenarios, it required the Russians to have twice the "stuff" as the Germans on a board. The Russians do not start with a huge CVP lead. Its around 160 to 120. Just 2 German HT's or other AFV's sneaking on to a board = say 10/12 CVP .. then requires the Russian to counter with 20 or so VP. Thats 10 squads, and thats not easy on them in this scenario. The German has so much mobility, this is a constant threat. Thats tough on them.
Also, despite the Russian having the "beast" tanks, several of them are radioless, and with the Stukas, a German FT , and great leadership and lots of CC possibility on Bd 3, I don't really feel the Russians have true armor superiority, so its a challenging scenario for the Russians.

Maybe a good tactic is to not even try for Bd 3 as the Russians, and concentrate on Bd 4/5/2. Another playing will have to determine that.

Regardless though, there is a lot of fun ASL in this scenario, and truly is a "complete" scenario where you'll be using every facet the game has to offer. Except maybe a paradrop, ah .. but thats another Turning the Tide scenario now isn't it! :)
