Consistentcy in Moderation

Well I have no choice I must speak out.
It has been noted in several of the sub forums in the ASL areas that Don has not changed the moderation policies of the site. But it does appear that there is a new sherriff in town who does not follow Don's spirit and application of the moderation of what gets posted here.

While this is Don's site (and it is very much appreciated BTW) and he is free to do with it as he sees fit, including adding moderators; one would hope that those new moderators are being cautioned to act only in the most extreme of situations and then only as Don himself would choose to act.

Apparently this is not the case. And so I make a public call for Tate and Canadien Dude to be reinstated, under probation, immediately. They were banned for commentary not so dissimilar to that of many of the members of these forums.

The moderator who banned them needs to be rebuked for overreacting and understand that until Don makes a public statement to the effect that the forum rules will be enforced to the letter, that the moderators should be following his lead. Not taking the law into their own hands with a level of harshness that is not deserved.

Sorry..I'm peeved at how this was handled.

What, precisely, was said? Can you recall?

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Small correction, as I believe you are talking about CyberRanger. CyberRanger is one of GameSquad's most senior employees, and has worked here since the early days of WarfareHQ. He very often helps train new mods behind the scenes and is the site's senior programmer. The ladders and all the custom code on the forums is his creation.

Brent is a site administrator of equal standing to me.

Considering the massive amount of flaming that goes on between certain individuals in the forums without recourse, this particular exchange must have been very nasty.

I think you'd get better consistency if the mods were less like the "secret police" (I know that sounds derrogatory, but it's more for visualization) and more like traffic cops.

I think the mods should patrol the "rooms", dropping little messages as threads stray off-topic, or get testy. When they need to get a more aggressive, a PM would be the way to go.

But, whenever the mods need to act with cards, suspensions, or banishment, they need to note which post crossed the line, and that the mods have taken appropriate action (not exactly what, although bans are visible on the member's profile).

This transparency would at least let folks who have been offended, or who have complained, know that something has been done, as opposed to the current system where everything happens behind closed doors.

You can still have a "no questioning about a punishment" rule ... don't think it needs to come with an automatic serious offense ... sometimes, people go "WHAT?!?!" ... not because they're trying to question the mods' authority ... but because they can't believe why a guy got dinged.

Again, transparency allows people to see what caused the line to be crossed ... folks will still question, but you owe them nothing more than what you have already shared.

As far as folks being overly critical of decisions? They're doing that now, they'll do it then, and they'll do it even if you cite chapter and verse.

Don't let the fact that you can't change human nature deter you from a change in the mod policy that is more user-friendly.
