Future of ASL beyondWWII?

Rate this Entry
All,

This is a discussion request for where others may think ASL might go for players to enjoy playing the game of Advanced Squad Leader.

I was involved with the Korea War HASL and enjoyed helping out with that development.

I feel ASL can be created for the 1948 Isreali/Arab War, the 1956 Sinai War and possibly as late as the 1967 Arab/Isreali War.

I also think that ASL can also be made for the Pakistan/India War(s) as well.

I have seen some "before WWII" information being shown in some scenarios, but I think these scenarios would just turn into too much artillery and not much chance of an infantry assault succeeding without the artillery.

Please feel free to add ideas.

This topic has been discussed multiple times in the main forums. The "discussions" never seem to follow any kind of logic; they just tend to be rants by people who holler about the conflicts they have done the most reading on, and they end up being popularity contests. A far more useful way to discuss the topic would be to examine what ASL is, what it does, and how it does it.

ASL at its base is a game that attempts to simulate combat in which the participants organized their infantry in squad-sized units, based their tactics on those units, and armed them with repeating, breach loading firearms. This began in earnest sometime around 1916 in the armies involved in the First World War. The trend continues up until the present day.

There is no reason, then, to believe that the ASL game system couldn't be used to usefully depict combat between modern armies similarly armed, equipped, organized and trained in that time period.

Something perhaps a little more useful to you. I have had the same idea myself, and have done some very preliminary work on various post-WWII ASL ideas.

I'm especially interested in doing 'ASL Cold War', though I'm also working on 'ASL Arab-Israeli', and 'ASL Vietnam' ideas as well.

Something I think that the Vietnam and Cold War ideas will probably have to include will be a ROF for squads, to reflect the usage of grenade-launchers and similar weapons. I think also that artillery and air support will probably look a lot different; it'll probably be easier to call for the guns/planes, but the missions might not stick around for as long (though you might be able to shift targets more handily). I did work on the KW HASL thing as well, it'll be interesting to see what MMP does with what the team gave them.
