Invasion

Posted 27 Oct 09 at 01:02 by SoccerDJ

I had a little spare time this evening so I jumped back into a game of Civ IV I had started a couple weeks ago. Several turns into my session tonight the mighty Frederick the Great declared war on me out of the blue and began the invasion of my lands. Needless to say this was an unprovoked attack and I was force to defend myself. So far the fight seems to be going well as I am technologically superior to Frederick right now.

However, this brings up a gripe I have with Civ IV and with most games where you upgrade technologies and advance “ages” or time periods. Most of those type games seem to just be a rush to see who can get to the highest tech or latest age first and then steamroll everyone. Now maybe it is my playing style which is sometimes a bit conservative but it always seems to end up that way, especially in Civ IV. All the nations get established claiming their lands and building cities and then it’s the race to tech up. Every now and again there is a small conflict or national crisis to deal with. But with all the racing to tech up I feel as though I never really get to enjoy playing in the time period or with the techs that you have throughout the game.

I think I would like a game that let you explore and spend more time with these techs or in the specific time periods. I would enjoy developing my nation or civilization more intimately and slowly through these periods. Being able to deal with problems to that specific time period or fight complete wars with that periods’ weapons and tactics. Then slowly being able to develop into the next “age” or tech level in which I could experience the fun and trials of developing the nation with those techs.

Now I realize that is asking a lot from a game as essentially I would want to play out the rise and fall of an entire civilization from a tiny tribe to an expansive empire. The time scale for the game would have to be slowed way down, maybe played by the week or month. Something just appeals to me about starting from a small wandering tribe and seeing what I can slowly develop them into.

Now I am not bashing Civ IV, as it is an amazing game that I will keep coming back to. Neither am I bashing Age of Empires or Empire Earth etc but I’ve just never found a game quite like the one I see in my mind’s eye. Maybe one exists and if one does please let me know about. But until that time I will enjoy beating back the enemies’ archers and swordsmen with my grenadiers and riflemen.
