View Full Version : Weekend Tourney?

Hello Gentlemen, the topic is a Weekend Tourney: can it be done?

The basic rough idea- set up a 3 day weekend one round tournament. (FRI 5 pm- MON midnight.) Has this ever been tried?

Teams: Only players who can commit to playing a turn every 2-4 hours (?) should signup. (not counting official down "sleep hours.")

Each player is alloted 2-3 hours a turn, it must be played and sent out in this time frame- a copy must also be sent to the very active "moderator/captain" to verify the time limit is met. Failure = forfeit. Could have built in breaks etc.

The scenario must of course be short, based on the # of days. There are a number of under 15 turn scenarios out there. Just on the surface a 12 turn game would require 48+ hours to get thru, out of maybe 55 "playable" hours.

I personally can't commit to being availible for a year+ for most of the 3 RD Tourneys held here. Once commited I would hate to drop out and leave my team shorthanded etc. But I might be able to squeeze in one long weekend. I realize this "weekend" idea might just the same rule out many of you; and might only attract those "hardcore TOAW freaks" (you know who you are!) :freak: .

Anyway it's just an idea, and someone who knows how to set this up etc would have to take over here at WHQ.

What say you gentlemen?:hmmm:

This is not impossible to do. In fact, to up the ante we could make it a real marathon and make it an 8 hour tournament. That way you only have to set aside maybe one whole Saturday...Start at X hour, allot only 15 minutes per turn (honor system of course) and do a mirror game. That way while you send yours out you get a turn back. Maybe rip out two rounds on a Sat. and finish up with the championship on Sunday?

Not for the feint of heart, but certainly within the realm of possibility. I know several players that I have played in near real time :D

I love this idea.... most of my weekends were spent waiting for turns rather than playing any... :(

The most efficient way to do this would be, all players using ICQ or some other chat medium that allows file transfers. E-mail can get lost or be slow in delivery.

Why don't we have a ACOW IRC Channel? Or do we and no one (myself) knows about it. It would give me something to do on there other than download full-length porno, uhmmm I mean, educational movies.

If anyone else is interested, I could probabally get one setup on the server (starlink.org) I frequent. I'm sure I could talk a friend into providing a bot. In the mean time, if anyone wants to get my attention, if I'm present here, I'll also be in #stars! on starlink.org (It's +s so it won't show up on channel lists, but there's no PW needed and noone'll be hostile because you're new) If I'm afk, I can be paged (!page Summoner). my pager is loud enough to wake the dead, so if I'm in the same room as the PC I'll here it.

Dan, FWIW I put that IRC selection in my poll just for you! IRC is really the equivalent of a "grognard" IM client. Although veterans know it's value and efficiency, it is hard to get the new guys to take the time and effort to get it set up and working.

Or maybe I am just saying that so more people will take an interest and WANT to hang out on IRC channel #TOAW. :D

So there are other servers other than Undernet.org and Sexnet.org? My IRC client keeps wanting to go to those servers. By the way, does anyone have parts 1 and 2 of Lesbian Cheerleader Nurse Nymphos Gone Wild? Just downloaded part 3, but I hate to break up a trilogy or not understand why something happened that was set up in one of the first two parts.
:D

IRC might be the way to go. I used to have a server (NT) that was set up with a chat program that was really just a front end for an IRC channel. It was quite sweet, but the program (by Microsoft) seems to be impossible to find anymore (Mschat).

Thus, you could use a chat program on a web page (similar to what we have now), but the hardcore users could sit on IRC using their standard clients such as mIRC and have all the normal functionality.

It seems like highway robbery to have to pay money for a program such as advanced chat servers to put on a webpage, when there are tons places you can go for free to chat on IRC. So let's try to come up with free chat alternatives we can all live with.

Dan if you want to set one up we can see how things evolve.

I use mIRC on NT and Win98. In fact I'm using it right now. It's a free download.

M$ chat isn't real IRC, like everything else, they bastardized the protocall, and it interacts poorly with standard clients. Personally, I won't mourn it's passing. I'll look for free webclients again if I get a chance. The last time I found one on sourceforge, but with no demo/documentation.

As for location, #wargames on irc.starlink.org atm there's not a bot to hold the channel open, but I'll try and sort it in the next day. MajorC and I are there now, though I'll be logging off in a few minutes

I'm going to leave my work account logged into the channel for a bot. So the channel should stay open for anyone who wants to check it out.

For a free IRC client try:
http://www.mirc.org

Works on most any O/S and is fairly simple to use.

The "chat" possibilities are interesting, but what about the topic, does anyone else have any comments or ideas?

interesting idea, the only problem might be the time zone differences. Can be up to 8h between US west coast and EU.

On the chat thing: (Sorry, Kerry) perhaps a part of it (at least for me) is that I >won't< go D/L mirc again. Or any chat software. If there's something I need to D/L to let the browser enter the chat type thing we have now, well that's cool, and I'll do it. But I've never actively gone 'chatting' after I figured it all out a zillion years back. And yes, crazy as it is, if I have to download and run mIRC to chat, as a seperate app, I simply won't chat.

But it sounds like you can have both a front page loader, and a seperate app to access, so that would be great. Chat lite for those of us who won't be bothered. I don't wanna see chat die, as I'm probably one of the bigger mouths in there, and I enjoy it. But as I only enjoy it here, specifically, I'm not into the effort to go install and run things, etc. Click on the menu link, or to hell with it!

lol

Most IRC networks do offer a java chat client on thier website. Starlink's is at http://titanic.hitchhiker.net/~storm/starlink/java.php

I really like the idea! Have done some "real-time" playing already and it was a great experience. I would also prefer the 8 hour continous playing tournament contrary to the weekend option. Mostly because I am right out of your time-zones (GMT+1) and I can fight through a night, but impossible to make a whole night-shift weekend. :bored:

However, having not much understood of your IRC/chattering, I just wanted to add that the warfarehq web-site has a chat room we could use, no? That would make us all come together, have a beer and maybe smoke some...

Whenever you can get arranged this marathon, count me in! :joy:
