View Full Version : Moderation in moderation
Moderation seems to be the standard for ASL today. Has any post ever been deleted/modified on this board?

I've locked a few topics, usually because they're duplicate, one because I thought it was childish. In retrospect, it didn't need to be locked.
I've yet to delete a post, and I've never modified someone else's post. I'm not sure why I'd ever need to do that. If it had content that was really offensive, I'd delete it.
It would actually have to be illegal information or real disturbing information, like my nightly pre-bed prep habits or something.

I agree, although MMP does not feel the same way. Frankly, I think the lightest possible hand is the way to go, but it is your nickle, and a forum is a place where moderation is sometime necessary since posts remain "forever".
In any case, I do not feel the need to be part of the ASLML if it is moderated. That removes one of the few redeeming qualities the ASLML had.

I don't consider some of the flame wars that were on the ASLML to be redeeming at all.
As a new user to that community I felt uncomfortable in asking newbie technical questions for fear of being flamed.
So, if thick skin is a requirement for the ASLML, then I'll pass thanks.

I completely disagree. Geeze, you guys are talking about bailing out of the mailing list without even waiting to see how much "moderation" is in evidence!
No one gains from flame wars / personal attacks / political diatribes in a discussion list that is supposed to be about a game. And I know that some have said the "enjoy" watching the flame wars. I don't care. Get your jollies somewhere else - i.e. not at the expense of hundreds of others who don't care to participate / watch such childishness.

Sam, I'll still make putt-putt noises as my Rummie battlewagon runs around your tank to shoot it in the a$$, and then I'll make boom noises when it blows up...

I actually trust Paul F much more than I trust Nat (sorry Nat, I just happen to know Paul from long experience as the list captain). But that still doesn't mean I want the ASLML moderated. Which also doesn't mean that I care to fight about it, which is why I am un-subscribed.

The ASLML has been fairly innoculous for a long time now. The "flames" that have occured have been over rules debates for the most part. The occasional political stuff is very occasional, especially considering the international nature of the community.
More to the point, when Paul was running the show before, and it got out of hand, a word from him reigned everyone in, with a few very rare exceptions. Why isn't that good enough now?
And I really do not care about the answer to that question. If I did, I would be trying to make a difference instead of unsubscribing myself. RIP ASLML.

rmosher is your man for insulting newbies. Simple solution is to place him in your kill-file. In any case, I suspect that nastiness towards newbies is not going to be edited by the moderators since the nastiness is usually on topic. It would be interesting to know if I am wrong about that.

Hmmm... I do not get this: when a newbie is subscibing to ASLML he is supposed to know who to put into killfile. :? I see it more like this: one insult and he is gone, either only from the ASLML or from the ASL community as whole.
I actually think that a moderated ASLML might make me re-subscibe, since if done right it will eliminate the nonsense that drove me off ASLML few years back. At least we need to give it a chance before judging the way it is.

Harsh, but I like it! Of course, that would end in the banning of the majority of posters to the list, leaving it as dead as it was a week ago.

Your decision and hopefully a good one for you.

People seem to be of the opinion that I am complaining about the new format of the ASLML. I ain't complaining, I'm quiting. It was down the last three weeks and I didn't miss it at all; why should I go back when I have the same thing here and on consimworld? What is unique about the ASLML besides Tate Rogers? When is the last time MMP announced anything on the ASLML? It simply is not a good source of information anymore, and has nothing over this forum or consimworld.
But that is JMO and more power to anyone that joins it or participates in it.

Well, I hope it is not this black and white. During the 5 years I was lurking on the ASLML it was maybe 3-4 people who were responsible for most of the unneeded noise on the ML, and even thay might have learned with some moderation of messeges (not by banning anyone).

It is indeed very sad that ASLML is not the great resource it once used to be. Frankly I do not believe it will ever be as good. Now we have at least three different ASL forums in the web so that the really good discussions about ASL are harder to find unless you are prepared to spend time watching several places all the time.

A few rebuttals:
I actually trust Paul F much more than I trust Nat (sorry Nat, I just happen to know Paul from long experience as the list captain).
No need to apologize. Trust and respect is earned, and being still quite new to this community, I can understand why people would feel more comfortable with Paul as a moderator. And that's precisely why Paul is not only a moderator of the new list, he's also administrator.
I'll be doing the maintenance work on the server, and maybe a bit of moderation if the other moderators are overwhelmed.
More to the point, when Paul was running the show before, and it got out of hand, a word from him reigned everyone in, with a few very rare exceptions. Why isn't that good enough now?
I didn't get Paul's email about the new ASLML, so I'm not sure what he said, but from the conversations I've had with him about moving the ASLML to the new server, I didn't expect things to change. Was something said that made you believe the ASLML was going to change, (besides the fact that it would be more reliable :) )?
I suspect that nastiness towards newbies is not going to be edited by the moderators since the nastiness is usually on topic
It also depends on one's definition of nastiness. To the dealer, it may not seem nasty. To the recipient, it may be quite offensive. To the moderator, it depends on what was said, and who said it. I may know the dealer personally, and know that what was said was in jest, but the recipient may see it another way.
With that said, there's still no reason to be rude about anything. You can disagree and have an ongoing discussion about something, but when it turns to insulting each other's mothers, then it's gone too far.
It was down the last three weeks and I didn't miss it at all;
Perfectly good reason to quit. I don't read it much, since the relevant discussions are usually cross-posted here anyway. I've yet to read consimworld, and I don't feel like I'm being left out of the discussion.
Still, I felt the ASLML needed to live on. It's a staple of the ASL community, and I truly believe it's what's kept the hobby alive. Players are too few and far between in real life, so an electronic bulletin board helps keep players in touch. It's helped me find players in town for FtF, so I decided to do whatever I could to keep the lines of communication open.

Was something said that made you believe the ASLML was going to change?
Nothing at all. Once again, I am declining to participate in something that I think has lost its distinctiveness. Nine months ago, I would have said a moderated ASLML was ok if it was stable. Today, I don't care?
To the moderator, it depends on . . .who said it.
That is one reason why I prefer non- moderated lists.
since the relevant discussions are usually cross-posted here anyway. .
My point exactly.
Still, I felt the ASLML needed to live on.
More power to you. I offered to do the same thing with basically the same software just before you started this site, but nothing came of it and I moved on to this site (and increased my time in consimworld).
If you are interested in MMP's plans, they do post over on consimworld often, as they used to do on the ASLML. So it is worthwhile to check it out, IMO.

This statement goes far to describe the lack of worthy posts to the ASLML, and the reason we're _here_ now. I'd imagine that newbies are required, not only to provide dollars for the projects we'd all like to see produced now, but to continue the hobby/game after we start pushin up daisies. I reckon its possible to be concerned only with one's own self interest and to heck with the hobby as a whole, but I think that is very narrow and doesn't serve any useful purpose. Therefore, encouraging new players to voice their "silly" questions should be encourged rather than flamed for asking about the intricacies of assault movement and such.

The only reason I joined the ASLML this time is the fact it is moderated. I don't need flame war junk in my email. JMO.
Now as to Ron picking on newbies like myself you just have to remember that he was a play mate of Methusala and bounced Moses on his knee.... Any one that old is always envious of youth!!
