With the 1st Starter Kit on its its way this month, will you be buying it? And why?

I wanted to vote, honestly I did hehe.

But I am of the sort, that never buys anything until he has actually seen it.

I won't have any reason to buy it, just to have it. That's just dumb.

But if I like the way it is made vis a vis actually teaching someone new to the game, then sure it would be an asset to me.

If the module/kit whatever the term you wish, is actually no different than me sitting down with a handful of counters and a map and doing it myself, then I guess I have better things to use the money on.

I suppose I have an advantage (possibly) that others might not possess, but I have a fondness for the teaching profession. I don't actually find teaching people stuff all that complicated.

So it remains to be seen, if the Starter kits really deliver anything of merit.

I will comment on them when they actually exist.

I suppose the difference, in terms of teaching someone, will be the cut-down rules booklet... so your newbie can go away and read it in full at his leisure, rather than you instead having to say... "read Chapter A, but don't about reading Ax.xx sections for now" where there are probably quite a lot of Ax.xx sections to be avoided initially.

It will probably also make learning solo easier as well, or learning for two people both of whom are newbies. I guess we'll be able to see for ourselves in a few weeks time.

I have no interest in them.

Yeah, IŽll get them to make my collection complete and to introdcue new players to ASL, as well as having some basic infantry only scenarios canŽt hurt either.

I'm not going to buy them, I have no need for them.

Get new players.

Ideally speaking, I am hoping the people that buy up most of the first print run, are new players.

Come on guys, your collections are complete enough, let the new players buy the Starter Kits hehe :)

I get your point, but I'd come at it from a different angle. I hope that lots of experienced players buy a lot of copies from the first print run, so they can each use it as a tool to introduce a new player to the game! :)

We're really pushing the starter kit to retail stores as well, becuase we know that one o0f the best ways to get new players into the game is for them to see it on the shelf, pick it up, and like what they see.:cheeky:

Keith has anyone even heard of my rebate notion in official circles?

I am serious eh, I think a rebate offer for ASL RB2 and BV would be a great idea if contained in the purchase of the Starter Kit.

It might lower the return of profit for those two items, but you don't make money until you spend it.

There absolutely has to be something inspiring the purchaser beyond his impressions of the game through a Starter Kit. The company has to completely stand behind the game and show definitively that the new player WANTS to get into ASL.

It's something I can put forward.

Keith, will it come in a "Historical Study"-sized box? Or something slimmer?

kdalton
01 Mar 04, 11:31
Something around that size. This isn't a huge game. Two of the new maps, one rules booklet, dice, six scenarios on three cards, one counter sheet.

'cos of the rulebook, are going to buy the starter kits so they can give it a go.

Does anybody subscribe to WWII History Magazine? The glossy one, not the Newsweek style one. We have an ad in there for the starter kit, my sub ran out, and I'm interested to see how it turned out on the page.

Someone mentioned it on the Mailing List a few days ago; my sub has lapsed but I'm off to Barnes & Noble later today so I will take a look.

Keith, you really need to consider advertising MMP products in Armchair General Magazine. I'm one of the webpage editors for ACG and I can point you to the right people if you're interested.

I'm having the same issue and I'm not sure what's causing it. We've made no changes to the forum.

We're preparing to upgrade to VBulletin 3.2, so hopefully it will go away. If not, we'll take another look at it. It is annoying.

Hi Girls

I now have ASLSK #1, not impressed but you got to own everything official.
Will never play it most likely though, unless some hapless noob asks me for a dance with it in VASL now that the maps is released.

Not even the scenarios?

Not even the scenarios?

Scenarios are stripped like the rules. No SAN, and playtested without Concealment, bldg levels, Dash, etc.... :crosseye:

I'm just the type of clown the SK is great for. I have bought almost EVERY item in the ASL catalog, either in stores, on the MMP site, or on eBay. This despite the fact that the last time I played a game was when SL (notice no "A" in front of that!) was at the height of it's popularity. As the system got more advanced through the gamettes and then ASL, I kept up in material but never in practice. I simply never had time to learn the massive volume of rules, and never had a FtF player around to sit and teach me.

Now, with the SK, I can read the entire set of rules in a sitting. I can walk through some games on my own to get a feel for the play. I can recruit some friends to try playing against without having to subject them to the daunting ASLRB. I can break in, and eventually move forward. I hope!

Some thoughts... the next starter kit should bring in ordnance, not AFV's. AFV's are cooler, but they're essentially mobile ordnance. So learning that piece first puts a person halfway towards the next level, full AFV action. Also, when the ASLRB is next revised, the sections that are included in the SK's should be highlighted in the full RB, so that we know what we've learned already and what we haven't!

Darrell... if memory serves, ASLSK #2 will be introducing ordance and AFV's won't come in until ASLSK #3. That's the right way round, I agree.

ok this is ancient and i'm getting a "today" stamp on it... :kotz:Whenever someone votes, it's going to get bumped. You can still tell if there is anything new in it before opening it though. Over on the right hand side where all the threads are listed, it shows when the last post went it and who it came from. For example: "Today, da priest."

I can't make a poll not get "bumped" when someone votes. It's supposed to do that to keep them from going off the page.

Then you need to start dumping polls, or put them in a separate forum. I am getting tired of this, and don't look forward to the day that the whole first page is nothing but polls.

Polls will not get bumped or marked as unread unless someone actually posts in them. For all intents and purposes, they will act exactly like any other thread now.
