View Full Version : Ho to photoshop (2): making backgrounds

DarkSora

This tut will show you how to make a full background, that will look really seksay! And it will take you all the way from creating the file, to saving it! Anyway, here goes..

Things you need to know:
i'll refer to colour as codes, use these codes in the colour chooser dialog to get the exact colour which i use:
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/6248/clourpicker4qh.png
i'll also reder to things like multiply and colour burn, this is easily selected by:
1.making sure your chosen layer is selected
2. clciking the drop-down menu (which should say normal) and choosing whatever you are told (eg. multiply.)

Background making
Lets get started:

Step 1: Well, first we'll need to create our canvas. Go File> New. And put in 365x130, as you measurements.

Step 2: On to the background, now! Now, you'll need some brusheshere's a link to the brushes:
http://browse.deviantart.com/resources/applications/psbrushes/?type=browse&offset=24

Save these to Program Files> Adobe> Photoshop> Presets> Brushes. That's where it should be located if you didnt alter the location, upon installation.

Step 3: Now, we go straight into the brushing! For you first layer set the colour to something like 5b71b5. Now just start brushing, remember, dont drag your brushes, and try not to use the same brush twice.

So, here's my first layer..

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/5659/layer1tut2copy9ra.png

Now, onto the second layer. To make a new layer go Layer> New Layer. With this one set the colour to something like 00ccff. And set the blending to Multiply.

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/8415/options1tut2copy9iq.png

And, now start your brushing again. And, with that, here's my second layer.

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/8237/layer2tut27yn.png

Third layer! Yay! lol. For this one, make the colour something like 1a3795. And, set this layer to Multiply as well.

So, here's my third layer.
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/2223/layer3tut25gj.png

Now, for the fourth layer set the colour to a grey. Mine is set at 949494. Also, make the blending of this layer Colour Burn.

Ok, here's my fourth layer.
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/7590/layer4tut27bm.png

well done, you've done the hard part, now its just saving it.
i reccommend making two saves off the background, one PSD so you can edit it, and one PNG so its ready to use in other sigs.

dont stick to this tutorial forever, the colours dont matter but i always stick to one tone of colours. ;) use different blendings to get different effects. Get experimenting! :)

enjoy!

heres some examples:

So...you say don't drag the brush, so are you just doing some random clicking with different brushes?

The links good btw, got some nice brushes :D

Damnit will you get rid of those dancing people!! Everytime they catch my eye I get mezmerized!! lol.

just a suggestion to the ones making tutorials, it might be a good idea to for one person to make a seperate topic giving links to each different Sengo tutorial, it may even get a sticky if it's alright with Luke, will save people searching for different ones if they ever need it

Er...wtf? The whole tut is about making your own backgrounds...where you get the idea of getting them off a site?

The site gives you links to BRUSHES which are shapes you use as a paint brush...

Mark - excellent idea I'll get on it straight away!!

erm well boy this is uncomfatable well i just cliked on 1 on the pics and saves it then croped it in the gimp and added dif colerd layers like dark sore told us so (but i allready knew how 2 do that )

meddigo
28 Aug 05, 13:43
But...thats not what the tutorial was about dude. If your not using photoshop, there is no point in using this tutorial...it isn't goint to work for another program...stands to reason ya?

meddigo
28 Aug 05, 13:48
I'm not, I'm just saying whats the point in trying to use techniques that are designed for Photoshop in another program?

Meddigo

Zero to bling bling psp
28 Aug 05, 13:50
well the gimp has most of the same things and does the same in the tearms of editing pickers it can not do the movie (makeing a bit of a movie into a gif) thing though

i have a prob i am on photoshop
and i am trying to select my bruse that i just put in the brushes foler how do i select the brusk so i can carry on?

meddigo
28 Aug 05, 15:57
Click the brush icon so that you are using the brush tool. Then at the top you will see the brushs tool bar, towards the left there is a button to click that brings down a menu so you can choose the brush you want to use. On the top right corner of this menu is a little blue arror thing. Click that which brings up ANOTHER menu, in there click Load Brush and go find and select the brush file you want to load, then you just have to select the brush 'head' like you normally would.

Meddigo

Mike
28 Aug 05, 17:51
:o ok ive tried to do it from what i understand (which isnt much lol) and its really embarasing, so embarasing i deleted it :( how comes yours are so kinda glossy and shiny looking? and you get that cool glowing look from the middle, i did exactly what you said (well i think i did) and it just came out soo bad lol

meddigo
28 Aug 05, 17:54
Hey mike, I felt exactly the same way. I the first one I posted was my 3rd attempt! You just have to keep trying. I found its good to use a largish brush on the bottom with only one brush, covering the bottom and then using smaller brushes on the other layers to do shadows and highlites. But how he gets it looking all glossy and shiney i don't know :(

Meddigo

DarkSora
28 Aug 05, 18:05
lol, i dont know how mine come out looking shiny or render-like.
what i tend to do is use 2 large brushes on the sides, then cover the middle.
the next layers only focus ont he isdes with the last one (grey colour) making out the light effect in the middle. :)

Mike
28 Aug 05, 18:27
its beyond me :( lol you are an official genius

meddigo
28 Aug 05, 18:36
Noooo don't give up! Just keep trying. Remember Sora's golden rule - Don't drag the brush! Just do single clicks! It will click eventually!! (Pun intended!)

28 Aug 05, 18:39

meddigo
28 Aug 05, 18:42
Change the colour for every layer. So do a Blue on the bottom layer, then maybe a turquiose. Then a light green and then white. Its up to you!

I've just finished taking screen shots for the Azsura border style...shall I post it up?

Meddigo

another tip:
first layer: dark tone
next layer: light tone + multiply
next layer: slightly darker tone + multiply
last layer: grey + colour burn

hope that helps.:)

When you create a new image, make sure its a transparent background. I add in a white background later on. Get JPGs every time you add a layer so we can see what you are doing at each stage.

You do need to actually change the brush head once you've loaded the set. On the drop down menu, there is a scroll bar with all sorts of different heads, scroll down to the very bottom. When you load a brush set it adds it to the bottom of the list.

Just play with the brushes and colours. I found that using a most solid brush for the bottom layer and then using more 'open' brushes (i.e. ones with more holes in and stuff) for the upper layers works well. Just try and create highlites and lowlites with colours.

Anything you like really lol. If you have transparent bits the PNG will keep those, other wise JPEGs will do fine, bt it fills in transparent bits. So take your pick really!

EDIT: PS saves as a PSD by default so just hit Save As and change it to what you want in the drop down menu.

Ronin:

Its up to you what colours you use, just use similar colours, i.e. don't use Green, Red and Brown or something. Use yellows, reds and oranges. Keep think linked. I don't know what you mean about making them darker, just choose a darker shade?? Its up to you. Personally I go for a darker colour on the bottom and use lighter ones on top.

As for what brush comes first...who knows?? Its completely up to you!! Use what ever brushes you like, just don't use the stock ones, go to the link in Soras tut and download some kewl ones like the Fear set or something.

If you are getting solid colour I can only think of a few things you're doing wrong. Make sure that you change the layer mode to Multiply. Don't use the same colour on every layer, each layer must have its own colour. And don't use the brush as a 'brush' per say. Use it as a stamp. Just click here and there, don't drage it everywhere other wise you will just get solid colours.

Hope that helps a little!

Sumit:
Practise makes perfect. My biggest step up was actually thinks to Sora and this tut. I could never use brushes well at all before! lol. So yes, just follow tutorials. Not to learn how to create effects, but to learn how the tools work and what they are. Otherwise you won't understand what you are doing. I use www.tutorialman.com for PS. Just find ones that interest you and try them. Some you won't be able to do (mostly because they aren't explained properlly lol) but you might do something yourself accidently! Its great what you can come up with just be tweaking settings!! Like I said, practise makes perfect!

thats a really nice background. It has an anime effect which is awesome. Im not to sure about that megaman render. You need something more anime/manga :D
