Wondering if anyone playing SASL currently.

If so what are you playing?

Want to hear about your Missions and Campaigns!

I am getting ready to run through the Band of Brothers CG again after reading Dick Winters new book and watching BoB again on DVD.After that I am going to switch to some Eastern Front late-war action.

Thanks,
MD

PS--anyone care to post their own CG's please do as I would like to try out some other folks own homemade CG's.

Started a US campaign about 2 weeks ago to fill in a few hours here and there.
Still on Mission 1 in June - Patrol. Ended up in a really bad starting position to block the Germans and it looks like a probable loss at this point...although there won't be many casualties and the boys are getting practice with the HW.

Hi

Please excuse my ignorance, but where is this CG from? I've started 2 SASL games, but did not get very far with them. I guess I was to much of a noob to really understand what I was doing. I am about to set up a dedicated space for myself at home so I'm going to give it another go.

Thanks

Over the weekend I just finished a mission. I was playing as the French, May 1940. I won the mission, I think... I forgot to keep track of VPs, but I only lost about 2 squads and didn't give up any VPOs. That was the first SASL mission I played to an end. SASL is a lot of work for a game of ASL. I was planning on doing a campaign, but after playing one mission, I am not sure that I am eager for more. I want to like it, but I am just overwhelmed by the additional layer of rules on top of ASL.

Are there any SASL play aids out there?

Cryophobia, I *highly* recommend asking peterk1 if he'll send you some of his vasl log files for some of his SASL games. Not only are they informative, they're entertaining as well. I don't think I could have gotten everything right trying to learn SASL from just the rules...but watching the turns unfold move by move in the VASL logs helped immeasurably.

Chris, you can find Band of Brothers (US 101st Airborne), Barbarossa (SS- Division "Wiking"), Jumping Cats (5th Infantry Division-IJA), and Moskva (7th Guards Rifle Division) at Hans Mielants' site; Hans Mielants' ASL page (http://www.mielants.com/Simulation/ASL.html). You'll also encounter the TSASL (Tank SASL) rules and several TSASL campaigns to round things out. Not having been to this site in a while the Japanese campaign (in Malaya) is new and most certainly looks inviting :yummy:

WARNING: If you have a dial-up provider be prepared for a long download. This site alone is a very good reason to go to broadband! The wait is most definitely worthwhile.

Hope this helps (happy gaming)

I played around with a Soviet company at the start of Barbarossa to try and get the hang of it. Played three missions and it was pretty much a cakewalk in two missions with only one close one. Had fun but some of the moves the system tells me to make for the opponent seem odd at times.

Have looked over Hans Mielants' site and am interested in maybe doing some of that.

Hi Peter,

Might I suggest a couple of options? Well, guess I'm going to do it anyway, whether you want me to or not.

You can post here on XG download area. That way you don't have to worry about quotas, and it's at a central location for people to get to.

Also, David Ramsey's ASL Scenario Archive, you can store the log file under the scenario ( or mission ) that you are loggin.

If so what are you playing?Well, at the moment I am currently playtesting "The Naked Prey" and am about to start playtesting "Last Train Out". Both are SASL missions for Valor of the Guards.

They're both SASL missions that Tom Morin has written, and they truly rock! :smoke:

There is the SASLA program. This can be used to automate a lot of the DRs and is quite nifty, but of course you then need some space by your gaming table for a computer.

I am playing a SASL CG with a Co. from the German 26th Infanterie-Division as they battle through Russia. I am having a blast! The CG is being written up in diary form by one of the officers (currently an 8-1).

Due to some uncertainty about my future living address i have put it on hold for a month or so... but i am very much looking forward to resuming the march on Moscow (though the weather looks pretty overcast at the moment)

But I can't speak more highly enough of them - they are hands down the absolute best SASL I have ever played and I'll purchase them in an instant when they're published. They have a CG feel, since you have Campaign Purchase Points to "buy" the friendly side forces for the mission. Besides, there was something way cool about buying 150mm Rocket OBA to bring down on an Russian NKVD strongpoint I needed wiped off the board!

For starters, just a play by play for a single turn is almost essential. This is where everyone gets lost.

Go into the automatic actions in depth. The most important thing that has to be memorized is that stuff.

I have been reading SASL rules and kind of writing my SASL guide as well but I have been busy with other things so I haven't done much for the past two months. What I would like to know is what all the steps are involved in setting up a simple mission and then executing it and finally how to handle stuff between missions in CG. Something similar like it's done in some VASL logs that I have seen but I don't want to click through the whole scenario just to see what's involved. Also I would suggest just using few leaders and squads and no other weapons/guns/armour. So basically I would like to see some form of framework/guide that I could use as a base to do SASL.

One thing I would like to see in SASL Guide would be how the rule on appearance of units like SS is actually handled according to the rules
(Section 17,IIRC.)

That rule has always confused me!

An example of AFV movement by the AI.

Showing how some Automatic Actions work in play.

Maybe see some different types of units for Activation. For example I have substituted 8-3-8 AE squad for one of the other units on the Activation chart for Germans (say for a historical Mission where no SS would appear.)

New Missions would be great as well.

Just wishful thinking on my part.....

OK, all this talk of SASL CGs made me want to try things out. I've set up "The Gathering" from Timmes' Orchard (since I know Amis and Germans pretty good) Only one leader starting off, and both sides are S? counters. I did have a hiccup setting up determining where S? counters gets placed in a 2 story building hex (when A9e says put it on the 2nd level). Took a while, but I think I got it. Now it's time to pillage :ogre:

An idea I had been kicking around for an SASL campaign, would be to use a battalion as the basis for the campaign. Play would still be a single company as the core unit on the board, but instead of at scenario end the refit phase a second company could be introduced to take the next objective so to speak. If the first company failed, the second, could try again...
Just thought I'd throw it out here into the ring.

Cool, some SASL discussions:D

Firstly I'm partcipating in a campaign as a task force in the 2nd US Rangers battalion in Brittany. Just finished of a mission trying to destroy some coastal guns in a german cave complex. Great fun.

This mission is a part of a GSASL wich is some kind a interactive role playing were someone is a Campaign Master and hands out mission orders the the Task Force CO. In short you get a mission every month with a deadline to be finished. You can follow the progress of the 2nd Battalion at Rangers in Brittany (http://www.mielants.com/Simulation/GSASL5)

There is also a 1st Battalion with it's own site where you also can find 18 fairly new SASL mission wich has been used in the campaigns.
1st GSASL Ranger Brigade (SASL Campaign (AH/MMP)) (http://web.aanet.com.au/1grb/)

The GSASL concept was not created by but developed by Rick Lubben. You can find a lot of more information at GSASL Home Page (http://showcase.netins.net/web/lubbensite/gsasl.htm)
The GSASL campaign at his site is unfortunatly suspended.

As Denzel said in "Philadelphia", explain it to us like a 5 year old lol. (hey, the GF made me watch it, what can I say). Basically, a step by step walkthrough explaining the whys/wheres...how to place the ? counters, activations, automatic actions, etc.

Besides, I have VASL on my laptop that we're taking with us when we go for surgery.

I had actually played with this group for a while and really enjoyed the concept... It was quite some fun to not only be fighting ones own battle but also to know that the results of others were going to affect the campaign as a whole.
Unfortunately some of the players took far too long to finish their games and thus the whole thing broke down. It was a great idea with a lot of promise and i would play again if the time commitment issue was fixed.

LEGION,

I really liked reading your diary of the 26th Infanterie Division.Sent you an email to your yahoo address giving positive feedback on your SASL page.

One question: on the Sept.17,1941 Mission you had an RE with SS troops apparently after the panzer grenadiers showed up,is that correct?

I am asking as the rule in Section 17 of SASL rules stating when certain Elite units appear (such as SS and or Paras/Commandos) seem to me that these units have to appear in first RE generated--but that rule has always confused me! Or is that a house rule to just have the SS units show up?

Any clarification on that particular SASL rule from the group, please???

Thanks,

Hi Peter,
8 scenarios, one of which needs the Kellam's Bridge map, and 2 missions for SASL. Campaign games (S&L format) are in the Gamer's Guide, which I do not have and can't comment on.

I've only broken open the pack. The mapsheet is in two pieces, and looks good, unlike like some of the earlier CH maps (re Carnage at Cassino). No experience with any of the scenarios, though they seem to follow historical context, so they could be a little off balanced.

Thank you very much for the feedback... i really appreciate it... i see a lot of people have been to the site but rarely hear what they think of it all!

I chose to let the SS come and join the party despite the rule contradiction.

I have been randomly deciding the missions i fight with only the decision of attack/defence being made to roughly gel with the historical situation they were in. Only if the fight involves the same map (as the future winter defensive actions will) have i chosen to ignore randomness.
I have also noted that there were situations where the SS fought in a similar place at a similar time, so i did not think it was un-realistic to have them turn up due to the confused situation involved in some of the envelopments.
Finally i have interviewed a lot of German war vets over the past 4 years and wanted to include their thoughts on the SS in my 'diary'.

In the mission you mentioned i liked the all-in feeling as the various German forces involved decended on the remnants of the scattered Russian command.

Another thing i have enjoyed about all this has been the synchronicity of the DR rolls, with mission selection and even the prevalence of certain Guns and AFVs very much mirroring what i imagined my men would be fighting.

Like the idea of letting the SS join in the fun--will incorporate that into my SASL Missions as well.I have used different types/combos of units for Activation (both Friendly+Enemy) so this should work well.

... I chose to let the SS come and join the party despite the rule contradiction. ...
Why not make such a choice? After all, in SASL you are your own opponent and you and yor alter-ego can make house rules to your heart's content!

One house rule that I have consistently employed involves the US# for the FRIENDLY company. I have chosen to set my US# for individual HS at 1½ instead of 2. Why this number? A squad has a US# of 3 so half of that, by definition, is 1½.

My SW teams remain at a US# of 2 since these are dedicated teams of trained men operating special weapons. The only real consequence of this House Rule is that I have had to recalculate the FRIENDLY company's US# for the 100%/70% values. This calculation also comes into play for any MSR's which take the company's US# into account for the purposes of setting up ENEMY forces.

I've too have been playing the first mission from the "Band of Brothers" CG. I decided to combine it with the "Personal Leader" CG as well.

Nine turns into the game and things are not going well. I had two squads drown when they landed in the flooded areas, two more were obliterated when a PzA LrS(f) they activated rolled a 2KIA. So far, the only luck I've had was when the AG was destroyed the next turn by a bazooka shot from Lt Winters.

The Personal Leader CG ended tragically. Lt. Keenan broke on Turn 4a, and failed to rally five times. On turn Seven, he finally rallied only to be whacked by a sniper shot the very next PFPh.

I've still got a chance to win, but I'm not going to have much left for the next mission.

Sorry to hear about your Personal leader, better luck next time.Have played BoB CG twice all the way thru and each time it was a blast.I am planning to do so again in a few weeks when I get my next week off on my shift rotation.

As far as new maps, was thinking of doing something where the new board is classified by type then added onto appropriate table as a dr option to replace one of the boards listed on that table.

That's what I'm looking into now. Also going to check on the various boards available on VASL to see where they might fit in.

Psycho,

Take a look at this map table:
http://showcase.netins.net/web/lubbensite/maptables.htm

Looks like it would be easy enough to incorporate the ASLSK maps into the table.I have been using the above table for my SASL map generation for a couple of years now.
