New at this forum. I would like to start a game. I tend to prefer the side that lost---the Axis. That way I don't feel so bad when I lose. I also would prefer Europe as a theater. I am looking to fight in WW2, sort of like the idea of buying a force, but a veteran will likely have to talk me through all of this. I have Steel Panthers III.

You have SP3 and it runs?

What OS are you operating, and what magic have you performed if you are running it in XP?

I personally like SP3 over the other versions, but I long ago got over how it's not in a hurry to run with XP for me.

I run on Win98SE. I have a program, I think it is called "boot magic" (or something like that) that asks me what operating system I want to load when I first start. It seems to make the older games more stable--for that matter even some of the newer ones that work off of the old models.
I think it is a fairly inexpensive program--next time I boot up I will check the name and if it is different than "boot Magic" I will repost.

I've heard of Boot Magic I think.

Thing is XP can run multiple OSs and can even deal with having Win 95 and Win 98 SE on the same system.

Problem is, Win 95 and Win 98 SE are a true pain in the butt to install.
Then there is the FAT and NTSF issue, You can't install on anything but FAT for prior to Win XP. So you have to intentionally set the partitions up that way (another real pain).

XP installs straight from a boot cd. Neither Win 95 or Win 98SE seem to be able to do that (or at least I don't recall ever doing it in the past). And how many people still have a 3.5 drive in a new computer? I only have a 3.5 drive, because I can't bear to part with the useless thing. 3.5 drives, what are they good for any more other than as a boot disc. I can't even think of using files small enough to fit on a 3.5 disk any more (I don't use them to store txt files any more).

I sure wish Gates would design a version of Windows that actually runs EVERYTHING including all the programs that are hardly complex or sophisticated.
IF Vista won't run yet even more of my games, he can surely shove it up his ass.

Course the hard part is we're more or less stuck with Wintel. Linux and OS X are okay but much more difficult to get old pc games running (I really loath emulation). So Gates kinda has the last laugh in those regards.

Anyways,

Thanks for the info. Will keep looking and hoping on SP III.

I had SPIII running on my PC (with XP) but won't run on my laptop (also with XP). I uninstalled it months ago but it ran OK, straight install. Luck of the draw I guess.

I actually prefer the Campaign Series to SPIII but haven't played that for a very long time either. :(

I have a dual boot option set up. I can boot up with XP or 98. However I haven't played SP3 in years and would have to reinstall. I'm also not up for the disappoinment involved in regressing to units with no camo patterns, no paradrops or the rest of the stuff I am used to now with winSPMBT.:)

With SP3 (for me) it's all about having a game that "looks" like Panzer Leader.

Frankly, gaming for me is all about something that looks like ASL or PL. I'm not really playing Steel Panthers when I play Steel Panthers, I'm really playing an ASL emulator hehe :)

And thus, SP3 is really just a PL emulator by the same token.

I need to sort out the computer this weekend. Likely going to revisit why it is I don't dual boot into 98SE. I know there's a reason I don't use it hehe, guess I should maybe right it down this time so I don't get curious again.

Probably has something to do with 98SE sucks :)

People, go to a yard sale and buy an old Win98 or DOS for twenty bucks. It's worth it to play all these great old games like SPIII and Alpha Centauri. Or, better yet, just never throw away your old PCs, because you'll have use for them later.

And as for Windows Vista, it's just another scam like Windows 2000 was. A worthless piece of crap that everyone will buy just because it's the latest hardware. The only real advantage it has is that it will run well with a 64-bit operating system. It's also supposed to be much more efficient than Windows XP (which isn't saying very much), but if you're looking for efficiency then use a Linux.

As for the SPIII game, if noone else is interested I'll play you. 1943, Russia vs. Germany, 5000 points each side. If you're interested, email me at thinkingmanwebsite@lycos.com . I'll transfer the files from my 98SE laptop (which dosen't have the internet) to this computer, which is an XP.
