Played my first Sqaud Leader game the year it was released, but only started ASL about five years ago, so I'll accept the newbie designation from someone of such an advanced state as da priest.

Yeah, but I can't believe we have 30 people on the ladder and no one has played a single game yet. That seems a bit odd. I'll be surprised if we don't start seeing some endgame reports soon.
The ladder is growing well though. It's been averaging about 1 new member per day, or pretty close to that. Not bad.

I don't know about the rest of the ladder, but, there is a PBEM game going on right now between me and Chris. It's going kinda slow because of my inexperience so it may take a while to report the game. You may have several PBEM games going. As soon as I get a handle on what's going on then I will try a live game.

Quite. It can often take a few months even to finish a short game on pbem. A player turn will require at least 3 logfiles even without first fire - typically it'll be more like six, usually a week's worth of emails. A six-turn game would then be about three months long...
Let's have a welcome for Stefano Marian from Italy.
...and Lary Brian (CPRad) from Canada.
Hi;
Thanks I'm very pleased to be here. As many of you I also cut my teeth on the Original SL (as my board 1 would attest to the many hours of play). I'm just now getting into ASL and have over the last two months acquired over half of all the modules. Still need that copy of WoA :-(,
anyway I will be using the ladder in the new year, I just need to finish a course I'm currently taking before I really get into ASL.
I want to thank two fellows that sort of led me to this sight but I've deleted their emails and can't find them anywhere on my directory.
Thanks
Larry Brien
I guese my becoming feed up with the socalled "RTS" genre lead me here. I have been playing those since C &C and really they are just leaving me flat.
So I rembered playing SL way back when I was one in the '80s. Seems anything I could remotly find similar boiled down to FPS. Same ho hum as RTS, I dont want to loose to clicky skills I want to loose to tactics and strategy.
But low and behold I find people are playing SL and ASL online.
In a word TOO SMOOTH.
Currently I have VASL and VASSL with the latest mod. Looking for the original when I can afford it on e-bay :( I have found some kind of compiliation of the old pre ASL rules online and am mucking about like that against myself offline. Less than satisfying to say the least. If MMP isnt going to support the SL series I do wish they would atleast post or release a final version of the SL rules.
Also a minor version of the game, a demo if you would would deffinitly help. It sure hurts to see the vendor of the game is out of print on the rules. :( I would gladly pay to dl such if I could and deffinitly fork out the dollars for the hard copy. Not only is the price of the initial investment to the game stifling it the lack of availability of is pinning it in its fox hole. Ya either have it or ya dont. If ya dont ya can go to flea bay and take your chances.
I look to getting ASL in the future and jousting with the members here when I do.
And a welcome to Michael 'PZchala' Pierzchala and Derek 'Kurt Meyer' Ritter.
35 members and counting. :D
Welcome one and all.

Howdy, all.
Getting back into wargaming in general after a fairly long sabbatical. 10-12 years. I had Squad Leader back in high school, but, didn't get into ASL. Now, I have this urge to play the system again. Been busilly seeking out modules. (Don't ask me about finding WoA. :)
Just saying hi as I'm new around here....

Thanks for the welcome,
Just a quick question; for setting up VASL games does everyone just throw down the gaunlet in the "opponent wanted" thread ?

Yes Jeff, Don wanted one place where people can go to find opponents.
Yes, it makes it easier than sorting through a bunch of threads on other topics. That could become particularly important if this forum eventually gets really busy.
Just start a new thread in there and tell people what kind of game you're interested in. You'll get replies quick enough.

I'm afraid the data is only going to be as complete as the member wants it to be. I encourage all members to fill out the information in their forum profile, but many choose not to do so for their own reasons. You could probably send him a PM and ask.

LoL...ASL sounds too much like work, for me. Besides, I'm too busy with betatesting Battlefields!, stirring tempests in teapots, ignoring my ongoing TOAW games, and driving on the OSS, to get involved in ASL... ;)
I'll drop by for the occasional sniping shots though... :p

spwaw= computer game similar scale
ASL= The Game, boardgame, which can be played between opponents on the Inet, but definitely not a computer game.

Be careful Lazlo. If you start it you are going to be as adicted as with TOAW, maybe more :).

ASL player for 3+ years. My son and I get in on average two games per month not counting monthly club meetings. Plank holder of the Fredericksburg Fire Eaters. Have played everything except night rules. Son and I just getting into PTO now.
Really really enjoy this game. Was a bit harder than I expected to learn but now am comfortable teaching the newbies in the club.
I have also acquired quite a list of online freebies. Mark Pitcavages site is a great place for useful free stuff.
Glad to be a part of this group.

Okay... new procedure for hereon in, since this thread is getting a little long and unwieldy. I'm already including all new players in a seperate section on the monthly ladder update, so I think I'll just stick to that for new ladder registrations.
Sound good?
Oh yeah! I love this plan. :bounce:
