Okay. I don't know whether this is too out there for this site, but here goes.
Me and my Dad have been on the lookout for a big screen TV this fall season, that old 27" isn't getting any younger! We've seen a nice 51" for $999.99 which isn't too bad (although with that price, you have to wonder about the quality!), but we're still not sure. We could really use some suggestions from you guys.

We're looking for a 46"-55" TV for no more than $1600 (canadian please!) and my XBOX 360 is going to be running on this so try to put that into context. Again, thanks ahead for your suggestions and if you think this topic doesn't belong here, go ahead and tell me, okay!

Is that a flat screen?

No not the $999.99 TV, nor does the suggested TV have to be a flat-screen.

Major decision time...if you're gonna spring for a big TV, you should make sure it's HD compatible, and widescreen...no sense spending a considerable sum of money on a 4:3 tv. I bought mine before there was much HD programming, just to play video games and watch movies in progressive scan, so I wanted wide screen from the get go.

I haven't checked prices lately, and I don't know how much $1660can is in *real* money hehehe...sorry couldnt' resist.

$1500 US gets you into the game with a basic, non DLP type rear projection tv. Ideally, you'd want one that will do 720p for the Xbox 360, but I don't know if that's in your budget....check the stats for each TV you look at. All of the HD ready ones will do 480p, and my Xbox looks great...but 720p will be ungodly. I just checked Best Buy, and they had a few choices in your price range. Don't know how Canada works...do you have any of the buyer's clubs like Sam's or Costco up there? If so, they have some good bargains from time to time.

Get as many component ins as you can...my Mitsubishi has 3, and I *still* need a switch box...I have my PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, DTV, and a Progressive Scan DVD player all hooked up to it.

Try to avoid any fancy built in sound stuff...you can accomlish a lot more with a cheap home stereo...and you don't need the extra cost.

Since you'll have this tv for years, spend a tad more if you have to...but make sure you get the features you need.
