Which one of the historical add-ons do you like the best and why?

I chose "A Bridge too Far", of all the HASL mods I like this one the most. The level of daring that this operation represented really spoke to me.

I picked Pegasus Bridge, but mainly because it is not so big a module, some can be fairly unwieldy in size.

Oh it should be noted the last two options are not "historical" modules per se, but only deluxe map panel modules as such.

I have only played a few of the historical modules' scenarios. Red Barricades is very good, but the scenarios are large and complex. Kampfgruppe Peiper I had some wonderful little firefights that had a desperate feeling to them. I remember playing my old opponent from Fort Bragg and have some very fond memories of these encounters.

I always thought the fighting in Italy would be ideal for a historical module.

There are two out on Cassino, the one to get is by HOB.

Greetings All,

My first post to the forum so I thought a good place to start was with the polls.
I picked RB as my first choice since it started out as the first HASL. I have been trying out OVHS and like it very much too.

Virtually,

Son and I played RB and really couldn't get in to it("blasphemy", I hear from the peanut gallery). Maybe 'cause a third of the way through an earthquake hit and messed up the pieces! :cheeky:

Wait for Ortona: Little Stalingrad. It's going to be a blast. :cheeky:

Hi, just found your site and thought I'd say hello.

I have never used a forum before but anything about ASL has got to be good - so here goes.

Based on that I hope that I don't accidently start any flame wars (or real ones come to think of it) - you bastards - oops :hush:

Anyway I'll probably be lurking more than talking but I thought I'd just say hello.

Oh yes, my favourite CG is RB (No suprises there) - just so much flexibility in purchases and strategy. Mind you I've only played that, KGP I and PB (AAAAGHH too many TLAs! )

P.S. Les - everywhere I look on tiniternet I seem to see you - have you been cloned? do you work ? :)

P.P.S Hey look I've discovered smilies

Those that like me like me a lot, those that don't like me don't like me at all :)

I can be very helpful and I have proof.

But those that don't like me just don't seem to know how to make friends hehe.

I am online a lot, because I am retired and every day is saturday. I like wargaming, and I don't mind postng my comments here and there. As long as the web site is an open and friendly one, that's cool with me.

There is only one Les the Sarge (but I would find it odd anyone wanting to pretend to be me hehe).

Hi, little old me again with a quick question.

I have recently purchased ABTF. It looks excellent but......how the hell do the British win. It seems to me that they have to hold out a whole day longer than they did historically, they're faced with Tigers, WP and onboard 150mm guns etc. etc.

Has any one who played this got any tips for the British as I will probably be playing this next (as the British) and apart from hiding in fortified cellars and hoping the Germans just go away I'm not to sure what to do.

Thanks in advance

P.S. Look a whole post without any smilies - I think I've got this cracked :)

...Damn

I don't own this one yet so I'm interested to hear comments about it as well. I assume it includes some smaller scenarios as well as a big monster campaign game? How good is the map?

Dabulamanzi

Yep, about 6 scenarios IIRC and 3 campaign games (first half, second half and the whole thing)

Map is excellent - I personally would of liked to see a bit more of the bridge (wasted map I know but..) just so I could shoot up Jerry before he arrived in the midst of my forces.

In fact thats sort of the reason I see the CG (the whole thing) being so hard for the Brits. The Map only covers the immediate area around the bridge which means that arriving Germans can almost pile straight in on you.

Actually having just looked at the rules again the limiting factor for the Germans is that he has to buy 1 inf and 1 armour unit from three of the four Kampfgruppes (each one enters on a different board edge) before he can can purchase further ones. Is this what helps the British ? Should I be aggressively defending by attacking these seperate groups before they can mass ? If this is the case how exactly do you assault 8 morale SS with Tigers, flamethrowers etc with a bunch of paras with piats.

I would love to hear from someone who has played this as despite my tactical/survival concerns it looks a blast.

There is one problem with this poll of course, you can't like something you have no exposure to ideally.

A person needs to actually have the game or actually to have seen it essentially.

I own
Red Barricades
Kampfgruppe Peiper
KP 2
Pegasus Bridge

I also have
Gavutu Tonambogo Annual 93b
Nhpum Ga ASL Annual 97

BRT
ABTF
Watchtower
Veritble

Have eluded me though.

I would like to get Veritible of course as there is always so little on the Canadians Long Left Flank.

Les,

I notice that you have KGP II. I heard that there were some problems with this module - is this true ? Are they insumountable ?

I enjoyed KGP I and was thinking of getting KGP II but have been put off by tales of bad map printing, faulty rules and counters etc

This is first I heard of these "problems" with KGP2, KGP1 had the "purple/pink" SS and messed-up arty tractors for the US, the dark map with hard to see crest lines, and somewhat unfinished rules.

KGP2 has a cleaned up set of rules, only counter problem was the arty tractors for the US(think i now have 4 versions of these and i wonder if they got them right), and the maps are brighter...

The last time I played on the KGP I map was 1995. We used a clear overlay on top of the map with various notes and such. I can't remember having any major problems with visibility on the map, but I do remember wishing that the hexes were larger like Red Barricades.

Sorry for not acknowledging this KGP comment, I have been away from the house a while and have not been able to get to this question.

No worries Les - I've been away myself.

Good to hear that KGP II is ok - looks like my next purchase then.

when facing the map with the looneybin to the left and the Chapel to the right--look in far upper left-hand corner at the forested area--less than 1% of the game is played there, but the crest lines are almost impossible to read---in fact errata came out telling where they were...

KGP I St Map
IMPORTANT: Note the existence of a Level 8 Crest Line in "St" hexrows TT28-OO31-MM30-JJ31-JJ32-II33-II34-HH34-HH37-GG38-GG40-HH40-HH47-II48-II54-JJ54-JJ56.
Also, the Level 3 Crest Line in StM49 runs into hexes M50 and N50, and thence off-map along the south side of unpaved road N51-O57. [p.P21; 96]
