View Full Version : Distant Hexes??

From a search of the forums I see that LOK asked a similar question last year and never got an answer on the board.

Is there someone out there who can enlighten me as to how exactly distant hexes work. I've noticed them in several scens (EA has one in africa).

Do they effect all unit movement? Or only airplanes, which I kinda gleamed from a discussion over at TDG. Do they effect naval craft? Land units? Bombardment? Air missions or only air movement. Etc etc....

Going to do tests tonight, but if anyone has some easy answers, I'd appreciate it.

I think I found the answer to my own question with different search criteria:

1)It has effects only on units attacking into or out of the distant hex (ie ranged weapons like ships, air units or arty).

2)Has an effect upon supply points placed within them without roads.

3) Also effects airborne units.

4) Also effects air units moving into or out of airports located within a distant hex. But no unit is effected by moving through a distant hex.

Is this the extent of it?

I'm not the person to ask, by any means. But I think you have the gist of it, from my experience.

How did you test the airport/air theory because I have tried it in a test scenario and the distance didn't make any difference.

I could do with it working for a scenario I am doing, but cannot seem to get the same result.

I generally agree with your conclusions, although it seems that units on Air Superiority are not affected by distant hexes, i.e they fly AS no matter how far the distant hex is.

I could be wrong but after a few experiments I still think air units can fly OUT of a distant hex and fly a bombardment mission (or bridge, airfield attack, etc.) without any adverse effect in their comabt range.
I need to do more tests...
So many tests so little time...

I did a few tests over the weekend and you're correct about the manual missions for air units (i.e. airfield attacks, airfield to airfield movement, direct bombardment, etc). It doesn't work. I'm not sure about AS, I, or CS. I'm actually starting to think they don't work at all concerning movement. I set one to 199 and was able to fly an air unit to another airfield that was 40 hexes away...when the air unit had far less than 199 movement points.
