View Full Version : Why the **** is Flashplayer trying to load, when I'm browsing this site?
Well?
In the interest of trying to keep the pages loading fast, and not gussying up the site with a bunch of flashy graphics, why are we accepting these forms of ads, content, etc?
Sorry to be a Luddite.

It's because it costs money to run this site and people don't donate enough to keep it running without ad support.
Why not go against your liberal nature and send them a few dollars?
:p ;)

I certainly don't see any flash plugins on the forums.

Scroll to the bottom of the page, and you'll see flash banner ads - if you already have the flashplayer installed, you won't even notice it unless you go all the way to the bottom.

Ah. It is only on the main index page which I don't use http://schlepper.hanse.de/smileys/cool.gif
And right now it's not flash but an animated gif.

We are not against advertisment (even I like them if in the theme), but flashplayer really annoying for me, too...
I would actually appreciate it if warfarehq would show copies of the advertisment on pages I actually view, such as the search page and the thread pages. I like to follow random advertisment to support the free sites I use, not to mention if it's for wargames or hardware I might actually buy the stuff.
If you don't like Flash then use a Flash management extension. They come in various forms, I use one which replaces the Flash with a button which when pressed will display the actual flash. Other extensions outright disable them but don't have the pop-up to download the Flash plugin.
If more people use Flash management software then more advertisers will go back to animated gifs.

Sent Don a $100.00 check three months ago. My indulgences are bought and paid for, thank you very much... ;)
And it's f*cking annoying, in that the pop up comes up on every forum page for me, other than replies, because my flash player is an older version.

See my post above, plenty of extensions available to deal with it.

In the interest of placating my Luddite friends, I've removed the flash banner.
While we can't do away with banners altogether, I can control the format of what gets put up there. If it conflicts with even a small percentage of users...then it really does no good for anyone. We'll stick to .gifs for now.
I would also like to mention one other thing. I have never "asked" people to send donations to Warfare HQ, nor should any of you feel guilty about using this resource (WHQ) to the fullest. That's what it is here for.
On the issue of donation, there are hidden costs associated with Warfare HQ besides the bandwidth. Warfare HQ has grown and grown over the years thanks your feedback, your ideas, and the energy you all have provided. We started out as a small enthusiast effort that was as much for our own enjoyment as it was for yours. Over time my perceptions of what the community really needs and wants vs. what Warfare HQ ought to be, have evolved greatly. The site is now much larger and more sophisticated than it used to be. That, in addition to its growing popularity, has forced me to change my approach toward how we do things. I don't mean to draw this out into a long boring explanation, but some of you may find this interesting.
There was a time when Pete and I were involved in virtually every aspect of what goes on within the club. We pretty much kept an eye on all the major discussions on the forums and we had a hand in nearly all of the events and material posted on the main webpage. Those days are long gone. Over time we simply found that we couldn't do everything that needed to be done. We also discovered that we would get burned out from trying to keep doing this stuff every single day. It got so bad that at one point I nearly lost interest in actually playing wargames and I knew we had to start doing something different.
We started bringing in more volunteer staff members to meet the increasing needs. At first, these early staff members didn't have as much influence or responsibly as the staff now enjoys. But over time we found that the best approach was to put one or two dedicated people in charge of each section while the senior staff concentrated on keeping the club on the right track. This approach has worked pretty well for us. The volunteer staff are able to contribute in whatever method they are best able to do so, while also having some say in the overall direction of things. I must admit, riding this particular horse has grown more and more challenging as the club has grown larger. It is quite difficult to recruit volunteer staff members and provide them with everything they need for their section while also attempting to keep the general membership happy. Sort of like a politician, no matter what I do I frequently feel as though I'm pissing off a significant number of people. The lessons for all of us have been hard ones at times, but I honestly feel that the Warfare HQ staff has done a solid job of living up to our goals.
As many of you know, I'm am now working on Warfare HQ (and Armchair General) full time. A few people have called me crazy, but I feel that there is enough interest in wargaming that I can create a small niche for myself. The bottom line is this: Warfare HQ has evolved tremendously in the last 18 months. I give a huge part of the credit for that to all of you and the volunteer staff. Part of it is also that I am able to devote enough time to really think this stuff through and then set the wheels in motion to make it happen. When I was doing Warfare HQ on my spare time, we generally had to think small and keep the projects more manageable. I'm now thinking "bigger" and I'm also relying on the staff more because of it.
From the standpoint of getting things done, I'm more than pleased with what we've accomplished in the last 18 months. From a personal financial standpoint . . . well, that hasn't gone as well as I had hoped. It's been clear to me for some time that I will have to work with some new ideas if I hope to keep this up. I had hoped to generate a modest amount of revenue from advertisement, but that idea has not worked at all. It has also been suggested that I consider turning WHQ into a subscription service like Consimworld. I have rejected that idea. I currently have plans to go in another direction, one that will not directly affect Warfare HQ at all. I have received some support from the membership and I appreciate it greatly. Enough on that.

if i remember we had the plan of making tshirts for the club :p
why not putting a marge for wfhq into this, if the price for a tshirt is 15$ why not to make it pay at 20$? something like that
i don't think that increases the price too much and if a lot of people buy it ( this is what i hope)
If you count votes, Don, you can place a lot more advertisment here, as long as they are not popups.
I prefer gifs and flash ads are landing in my blocker first until I clock on them, which I do more often than not.
For people who get the popup to download flash player everytime: there are multiple solutions which either do something with the flash or supress the download suggestion. I don't think you should demand that a privately held forum should get rid of flash because you install neither of them. Just my opinion.

I agree completely.

Which blocker do you use?
I don't think you should demand that a privately held forum should get rid of flash because you install neither of them. Just my opinion.Again, I agree completely. I would never demand that Don (and the other site owners) do anything. It is their site, and it is offered for my use, entirely on their own good graces. As any freeloader, I can either deal with it, or leave. Regardless of the changes to the site, over the years, I've never seriously considered the latter... ;)
That said though, I will always feel entitled to b*tch, gripe, and whine about the situation, because other than gameplaying, that is what I do best... :p
Of course, I respect the rights of the administration to tell me to go jump in a lake, as well.

I agree Las, especially if there is a hot looking chick in the water
Which blocker do you use?
I use "Flashblock"
http://texturizer.net/firefox/extensions/#flashblock
It is not strickly blocking, it is "delay until I say I want to see it".
I'm not really satisfied, I would like to have the guard on and off by site.
