I love ths movie. Normally I judge stuff like this on historical accuracy, and they hit it on the head. Not the plot, but everything else rocked.
Saw it at the movies when it came out. Bought the DVD beginning of May. Excellent movie, great story.
Very good movie. Bought it when it came out on dvd. Ive seen it about 5 or 6 times since. It will be one of those movies that you will never get tired of

A very good movie. I don't like Tom Cruise, but he did such a good job at acting that I forgot it was him. And the Japanese actors were all excellent as well. Highly Recommended! :thumb:
I thought the final battle in the movie was fantastic, the use of fire and everything was well done!
About the only scene I didn't feel fit well historically was when the waves and waves of ninjas came. Seems to me more ninjas appeared in that fight than should have been in Japan!
However, I forgive that scene because it was awesome! (I mean come on, waves and waves of NINJAS!)
:hurt:
I got into it with some people about the 'ninjas.' While they were called ninjas by Cruise and the entire cast and crew, you can tell by the way they operated and the arms they carried, that they were in fact, not ninjas.
However, the last battle was spectacular, and on one note, I wanted Cruise to die with his lord.

I dont care for his movies either.........but took a chance on this one. Very good film............I do believe it was because he played out of his "normal" character mode and made a person forget that it was him.

Exactly. He can be quite a good actor when he needs to be. He kinda of seemed like Kevin Costner to me in the movie. But thats just me.

Cruise-san's portrayal of a functional drunk & recovery from alcoholism was very well done.
The relationships between Nathan & Katsumoto, Ujio, BOB and the clan was just superb.
It is a thinking man's movie with much more to it than meets the eye.

Rented the DVD and was impressed with all the extras, owning it is next.

Nah, if he was like Kevin Costner I wouldn't have liked the movie, but Cruise actually had some good acting in it!

I agree with you regarding Mr. Cruise. Overseer has compared him to Kevin Costner, which is convenient, since I don't like the work of either of them and won't go see them, particularly in an unbelievable plot like this one.
JS
Haha, well I was saying he isn't comparable to Kevin Costner (who I despise).
In regard to the unbelievable plot, yeah I agree. The plot was out there. But remember, this is a movie. Movies are meant to tell stories with pictures. Not every movie has to be historically accurate. This was a historical fiction, and I believe a lot about the movie's setting was well done. It's nice to step away from the real world and real events sometimes.
(I know, I know: HERESY)

Excellent film THOUGH it did lack accuracy in some ways about the Samurai Rebellion itself. I found a site that mentioned the innacuracies but I don't remember what it was. I think this one and Minority Report are movies when Cruise actually becomes someone else. That last charge was amazing too!
Why does the Old Irish Sergeant always gotta get killed?

On another note, I've found that I'm one of the few people that actually live Kevin Costner as an actor. Oh well!

Weren't his last words the one he uttered before the battle, when Cruise told him to go guard the supply train?- "No disrespect meant, sir, but stick it up your ass." :thumb:

Yeah well the Sgt-Maj in Glory didnt get it, cuz he didnt go on the field... Smart Irishman that man.
I believe some things on the site said that the Samurai rebellion also had firearms and that the Government was modelling their army more off the French and British then the Americans and hired more of them than Americans.
Well if I remember correctly, the Samurai's would employ firearms, but not used by them. I believe they used the peasant types to use the firearms, if I'm not mistaken.

You're talking about Kilrain, right? He died in a hospital on the 3rd after being wounded charging down the hill. Only in the old John Wayne movie does the Irish Sergeant ever survive!

And that's because the Victor McLaughlin character would always be so soused he wouldn't even know if he'd been shot.

I really liked the battle scenes and all of the military hardware. Yet another thumbs up for the armorers at WETA (the same ones from Lord of the Rings). The DVD extras are nice and really make you appreciate the large scale the battle scenes were done in. Cruise is OK (better than I'd expected), but somehow I still feel his part was miscast.
Sengoku Jidai was the time of "The Country at War." It was from (I think) 1458-1556....I think....you might wanna look into it.

It was good entertainment, though not very accurate, I suspect. I must say that I was surprised at the talent and range displayed by Tom Cruise - not generally one of my favorites. Prior to viewing it, I expected the film to be nothing more than a grandiose adventure flick. I was pleasantly surprised.

ARRGH!!!!
This is off-topic but really bites my ass. When I was growing up all the movies had the NCO's as the comic relief. As my career in the military continued it really started to get on my nerves.
I like Victor McLaughlin but the best Cav NCO's were played by Ward Bond as RegtSGM in Fort Apache (w/JWayne and HFonda), and Ben Johnson as Cpl/Sgt Tyree.
The Tm Sgt in the Green Berets piqued by interests in experimenting in demolitions in JH/HS.:horse:
Terrance Knox in Tour of Duty though changed things as the way NCO's were portrayed. SPR followed suit, the BOB was taking the X's out with every shot. The Episode one the 1SG brings me to tears every time...
but then... WTF do I know... I'm just a old fire horse hearing the damn bell....

Yeah, Ben Johnson was the real deal. Nobody did westerns any better. That's because he was a real cowboy before he ever got into movies. He was hired as a wrangler on "Red River" and the director liked him so much he got a speaking role. That's why no actor ever looked more natural on a horse than ole Ben. The rest is history.

I wouldn't call it "great", but it is worth a look. :)
It wasn't the best war film I've ever seen, nor the best Cruise film I've seen, but it was entertaining. Rather like a Japanese "Braveheart", I thought.
Superb movie :thumb:

Actually, that was one of the things I liked about the movie. It was intended to be a war movie, and it stuck with the plot, instead of getting bogged down in...other things.
